I was offered a Lead Analyst position for a Bn deploying to Afghanistan... and my wife asked me to turn it down. She's tired of being a single mom. I can't really bitch about that kind of thing in front of her....

Aww bitter sweet. Are you active USMC or retired? I ask because civilian contractors make a lot of the same sacrifices we do. Folks don't usually realize that.

Sorry to hear it, but in the end, you'll get more satisfaction out of having a solid relationship with your wife than you will out of any job. Sounds like you're making the right call even if it means making some sacrifices.

I am involved with the families who stay home while their spouses are deployed. It is a sacrifice for this country that truly goes unnoticed and is under appreciated. The stress they are under is tremendous being "putative" single parents. I play the guitar for their kids when I bring my son there.

You have given to your country now it is time to give to your family.

Having deployed and seeing the effects on my wife at the time, I think I would have made the same decision. To stay home.

Sometimes, family HAS to come before country...or career.

Active for now. Looks like we'll be getting out and going private side. The deployments are more controllable (and shorter) and the money is better. I'm not really thrilled about it, but:

still. I'm moping now I have to go tell them that they stuck their neck out to offer me exactly what I wanted and I have to turn it down.

Time to grow a spine! Isn't that the usual RWNJ response to whining? It's so disrespectful to go behind your wife's back to tell the world how you really feel.

My wife finds it hard for me to be gone only a few weeks at a time because of my work offshore, can't imagine if it was months or more.

Your children won't remember all the nice things you bought for them, but they'll remember the moments that you were there.
