LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder's decision to suspend efforts to bring Syrian refugees to Michigan in light of the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday has sparked controversy and launched the state into the national debate of how to protect U.S. citizens while providing a haven for those who desperately need help.

Snyder's office released a statement Sunday saying the state would not be accepting any Syrian refugees until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security fully reviewed its procedures.

'Risk to our community far too great'...

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz on Sunday called Legislator Joseph C. Lorigo uninformed for proposing that Poloncarz reverse his stance on accepting Syrian refugees into Erie County in light of the terrorist attacks in France.

Lorigo, the Legislature majority leader, made the call Saturday on Twitter and Facebook, and later told The Buffalo News he’s concerned because one of the gunman was disguised as a Syrian refugee with a Syrian passport.

“I had a conversation with an immigration specialist with Homeland Security, who told me ISIS claims to have 4,000 terrorists disguised as refugees stationed already in Western countries,” he said.

Smart money is on stopping refugees from coming here.......ISIS most likely has large numbers of operatives in country already.

I'm not a big fan of Synder, but this is the right decision... Bravo!

I don't see how the federal government can force states to accept these people. this is a problem that I see with state rights.
there is nothing in the constitution that allows the federal government to force state to accept these people or house them in any way.

sure the federal government can accept refugee's but that doesn't mean they can force the state to house them in anyway.
I could be wrong, but what is worse is that these people come from a very extremist country an have lived there all their life.

they will not be willing to accept our way of life in fact they hate it with a passion. we have been demonized by their leaders for years.
I think this is just inviting trouble to our shore and Obama is the person to blame for this.

these people are not safe amongst our general population.

No men . . . Women and children.

Given the fact of the Paris attack hasn’t changed the fundamental risk from the refugees to the US or the American screening procedures, how can this be anything other than an entirely political decision? If you’re going to celebrate this, you’ll be in a poor position to complain when politicians make politically motivated decisions you disagree with.

not wanting to support 100k people from a known terrorist country is protecting your populace which is what elected officials are supposed to do.
there is 0 benefit to this country by bringing in 100k people from a country more so when they are of the terrorist age group and have never lived in a free country.

to release them into the public without rigorous screening and identification which their country doesn't have. is stupidity beyond belief.
the odds of them adapting are slim to none. more so the older they are.

it is just more burden on taxpayers to support another 100k people.

No men . . . Women and children.

there is at least a chance for them to adapt and integrate.
more so when they get out from under their oppressed society.

these men between 18-40 no. they are a threat.

Especially in a state decimated by automotive industry losses.

they just admitted they don't have a solid way to screen these people. they have a very limited idea of who they are.
AL and a couple of other Gov. are declining to host any of them and Jindal is spitting mad that the Government allowed them into his state without
his knowledge.

this is what I am wondering if any of this is constitutional that the federal government can force these people on states.

If that were the case today it would have been the case last week too – nothing practical has actually changed. I’m not interested in debating the rights and wrongs of the outcome, I’m just pointing out double standards. You don’t care if politicians lie to you as long as they’re the lies you want to hear.

Good question.

The Fed always squeezes the purse strings and blackmails to get what they want.

I don't have a problem with folks becoming Americans, but the Paris situation sheds a whole new light on verification of any new applicants.

I hate to say it, but extreme caution at this point makes a lot of sense.

We also need to worry about 'sleeper' moron terrorists who are already here and just need to be activated.

There needs to be stellar coordination between local, state, and federal law enforcement - and I do not have confidence that they all play well together.

There can not be, however, shortcuts in our legal system that ensures Americans the presumption of innocence and individual protections under the BOR.

If I hand you 10 grapes and tell you one is poisoned,.

how many would you eat?

I say find a small island and build camps for them. Only 2 places to travel. To the island or back to Syria. When it gets too large? Pick a new island. I'm sure there are plenty out there.

this is just babble.
you can either address the topic at hand or you can't.

the fact is more than one Gov. is standing up and saying no you cannot send these people to our states with the current issues with the vetting process.
the fact is they should be doing this since the federal government has no way to vet these people.

in fact if the US government can't thoroughly vet these people they shouldn't be allowed in to begin with.

the government has already admitted they can't vet the people they are bringing in and letting loose in these states.
I think the Gov. have a right to stand up and say no. you can't force unvetted people on us that pose a danger or harm to our citizens.

No kidding - at this point, we should worry about vetted people.

yep and he is protecting his state and his people from a potential issue.
I guess you just let anyone into your home without knowing who they are then huh?

So why wasn’t he protecting his state from the exact same potential issue last week?

major terrorist attack says something about that along with the fact they hadn't gotten here yet and even when they were gov. were raising
red flags over the vetting process.

Once a person is admitted to the USA - can't they go to any state they want to go to?

They're a resource. Train 'em, arm 'em and give them leadership. You got yerself a resistance force.
