TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The main pro-reform candidate in next week's presidential elections says Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has harmed Iran's international standing by questioning the Holocaust.
Mir Hossen Mousavi spoke Wednesday during his first head-to-head debate with President Ahmadinejad, which was broadcast across Iran. He said Iran has been "downgraded" in the eyes of world by Ahmadinejad's firebrand style and statements.
Just hours earlier, Ahmadinejad called the Holocaust a "big deception" that Israel uses to sway international support.
Mousavi and Ahmadinejad are in an increasingly tight race heading into the June 12 election. Ahmadinejad's bid for re-election has been burdened by Iran's stumbling economy and accusations that his policies have left the country increasingly isolated.

The Associated Press: Reformist rival: Ahmadinejad 'downgraded' Iran

we have just watched a brave debate which in there ahmadinejad criticized many powerful figures of islamic republic and mousavi totally crushed ahmadinejad by questioning all of his stances. I guess we will here much more about this very soon!

TEHRAN (AFP) — Iran's former premier Mir Hossein Mousavi accused hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of "undermining" the Islamic republic's dignity during his four-year term, in a television debate on Wednesday ahead of next week's presidential poll.

Ahmadinejad's government "has undermined the dignity of our nation," said Mousavi who is considered the conservative president's main challenger in the June 12 election

"It has inflicted heavy damages on us and created tension with other countries," said Mousavi, a moderate.

The "mismanagement" of the country by Ahmadinejad's government forced him to enter the presidential race, Mousavi said in the debate aired by the English-language station Press TV.

He charged that Ahmadinejad's foreign policy suffers from "adventurism, instability, exhibitionism and extremism."

Mousavi, who was Iran's last prime minister before the post was scrapped in 1989, is seeking a comeback after two decades of political wilderness.

Ahmadinejad, who opened the debate, said he and his government have been facing sustained "attacks" from Mousavi and his supporters, like former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and reformist two-time president Mohammad Khatami.

"They said in six months this government will fall apart... they tried to crush this government," said Ahmadinejad who is seeking a second term in office.

You had a presidential debate? Very cool.
Who came off stronger? What type of questions was asked?

Is Ahmadinejad far in the lead as the press seems to suggests?

In Iran, it really depends on which press you're asking.
Hopefully Mousavi would win the elections and finally bring
an end to the unnecessary hostility Iran shows to the western world.

at first it was god damn shocking when ahmadinejad started an all-out offensive on last 27 years of iranian presidency, and key figures such as khatami and hashemi rafsanjani, clearly trying to discredit them with unproved accusations. mousavi responded mildly, attempting to bring facts of ahmadinejad's presidency into the debate, but in the end, when it was mousavi's turn, he utterly challenged all his stances and although ahmadinejad tried to interfere, he didn't let it so I guess mousavi was so powerful and smart in this debate, however, ahmadinejad was shockingly frank and actually named names which haven't had ever happened in IRIB.

What type of questions was asked?
it was a free debate which moderator only would manage time and turn. candidates themselves would lead the debate.

Is Ahmadinejad far in the lead as the press seems to suggests?

nope, not at all, and the press does not suggest that afaik. he's tightly challenged.

Interesting, i read a article which implied Ahmadinejad is trying to bribe votes almost.
Is it true or just made up?

Thanks mate, keep it up.

ahmadinejad is clearly using EVERY POSSIBLE RESOURCE to get votes and he still fails. you can imagine how bad the situation is over here! people want freedom much more than potatoes.

And you deserve freedom, best of luck to Mousavi. The Arab world seem finally ready to progress on peace with the west and US on side, it'll make life easier with Iran on board as well

Ahmadinejad attacks Hashemi, Khatami

Incumbent Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has focused his attacks on former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

During a televised debate with his rival Mir Hossein Mousavi, President Ahmadinejad accused the two Iranian figures of masterminding a plot to push him out of power.

He underlined what he believed were examples of mismanagement and corruption during the two president's administrations.

Mousavi in response attacked Ahmadinejad for accusing the people who did not have a representative in the debate saying the tactic was adopted by the incumbent President because Ahmadinejad had not found anything against him.

Mousavi also slammed Ahmadinejad for ignoring the legal principle of the presumption of innocence through accusing those who were not convicted in a court.

Elsewhere, he touched on the issue of Ali Kordan, the former interior minister who was impeached by the Parliament (Majlis) over his fake academic degree and said Ahmadinejad still supported him.

Elsewhere, he touched the issue of Ali Kordan, former interior minister who was impeached by Parliament over his fake academic degree and said Ahmadinejad still supports him.

Ahmadinejad said many officials under Rafsanjani and Khatami acquired fake academic degrees and his support has nothing to do with Kordan's degree.

He also accused Zahra Rahnavard, Mousavi's wife of studying in universities while she was a government employee to receive two master degrees and obtained her doctorate without an entrance exam.

Mousavi, however, said Rahnavard had studied for ten years to receive a doctorate and hit back at Ahmadinejad for adopting "an immoral strategy" by his move.

Iran's presidential election will be held on June 12. President Ahmadinejad, Mousavi, former parliament speaker Mahdi Karoudi and Secretary of Iran's Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei are the candidates.

Iran's Ahmadinejad defends his policies in TV debate_English_Xinhua

TEHRAN, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday defended his government's foreign and domestic policies in a TV debate with presidential hopeful -- former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi.

"During this four years, great dignity has been established in both outside and inside Iran," Ahamdinejad said at the beginning of the debate broadcasted live by the state-run television.

"The Iranian nation has made itself an adorable image in the international community," he said.

Ahmadinejad has been criticized by reformists and some conservatives for the country's soaring inflation and social problems such as high unemployment rate and housing shortage.

He has also been confronted with sharp criticism towards his hardline approaches which resulted in Iran's gloomy image.

"The social problems are not formed in just four years," he said, adding that unemployment and economic problems are not new issues in his government.

Mousavi, who is considered as the incumbent president's main challenger in the upcoming June 12 election, accused the Ahmadinejad government of undermining the dignity of the Iranian nation.

"It has created heavy damages on us," Mousavi said, "the tensions between Iran and other countries are increasing ... is itin our interests?"

"The mismanagement of the country forced me to come to the stage," he said, adding that Iran must change its foreign policies from the way of adventurism, instability, exhibitionism and extremism to the way of moderation.

Mousavi served as prime minister of Iran from 1981 to 1989. He has called for freedom and fairness in the upcoming presidential election in his election campaign and has expressed dissatisfaction with Iran's media in campaign activities.

Reformist former Parliament Speaker Mehdi Karroubi and conservative former Revolutionary Guards Chief Mohsen Rezaei on Tuesday began the country's unprecedented face-to-face TV debate series among presidential candidates.

Iran's candidate says Ahmadinejad humiliated Iranians | Reuters

TEHRAN (Reuters) - The leading moderate candidate in Iran's upcoming presidential election accused on Wednesday hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of humiliating the Iranian nation by adopting "extremist" foreign policy.

In a live debate on state television between the main candidates in the June presidential vote, former Prime Minister Mirhossein Mousavi said Iranian's dignity had been damaged since Ahmadinejad was elected in 2005.

The streets in the capital Tehran were largely deserted as millions of Iranians watched the debate, the first in the country's history since its 1979 Islamic revolution.

"The Iranians have been humiliated around the globe since you have been elected. I truly feel sorry for them," Mousavi said.

Ahmadinejad's critics, including reformists and even some fellow conservative, say his fiery anti-Western speeches and his questioning of the Holocaust have isolated Iran, which is at odds with the West over its disputed nuclear work.

Iran says its nuclear program is for electricity generation, but a number of Western countries believe the aim is to build nuclear weapons.

Mousavi has said he would continue talks with major powers on the nuclear issue if he is elected president, in contrast to Ahmadinejad, who has ruled out any nuclear talks with the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany and Britain.

Mousavi also criticized Ahmadinejad's questioning of the Holocaust.

"Your Holocaust remarks have increased global sympathies for Israel when the Europeans were going to condemn its attacks on the Gaza strip last year," Mousavi said.

Iran refuses to recognize Israel.

The president hit back at Mousavi, saying he was fighting against a "powerful triangle made up of reformist former President Mohammad Khatami and his pragmatic predecessor, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani."

He accused Khatami, Rafsanjani and Mousavi of trying to weaken the Islamic state by wanting a policy of "detente" with the West.

Mousavi, Ahmadinejad's main challenger in the election, advocates better ties with Iran's Western critics while rejecting their main demand -- a halt to sensitive nuclear work.

The debate occurred as U.S. President Barack Obama prepared to make a speech on Middle East issues in Cairo on Thursday in which he is expected to seek a way to mend ties to the Islamic world.

I surely hope that Ahmadinejad loses so that more moderate leaders can usher in a new era in Iran of more freedom and better international relations. I sorely want to go to Iran and see the remanants of the Assyrian and Persian empires. There are still many sites to be excavated, and who knows what may be added to history.

Three questions from your average dumb American:

When are the elections?

Even if Mousavi wins, don't the religious mullahs actually run the country?
...I always thought Ahmadinejad's position was more of a mouthpiece with no real power.

I know the avg Iranian wants freedom and modernity, will you ever be able to have that without removing the religious leaders from power?

I still don't trust the pre-screened "reformist" candidates, whoever is elected President of the Iran will still be a puppet of the Ayatollah. I want an actual reformist who will break (or even criticize) the power circle of the theocrats but such candidates are not allowed to run.
