Whitehouse doesnt support American POWs

Rachel Maddow reported today that the Whitehouse yes the same Whitehouse that sent Americans into combat against Sadaam Hussein does not support the American military personnel who were taken prisoner by Iraqi forces and tortured in their lawsuits against Iraq. What?Even the Geneva Convention does not protect countries against lawsuits involving the torture of POWs.These pieces of excrement in the Whitehouse cannot go fast enough.I geuss they are afraid that if they allow lawsuits their days of lining their pockets with Iraqi oil money are over.

I imagine the WH fears that they will be sued by those they have held and tortured if that allow our soldiers to file such suits.

Re: Whitehouse doesnt support American POWs

Jake Blues,

I haven't seen the report, so I can't comment on specifics. However, if the torture occurred under the Saddam Hussein's regime, it would not be appropriate to hold the current Iraqi government accountable for war crimes for which it is not responsible. Any legal action to do so would almost certainly fail.

As a Bush hater and someone who is against Global Domination and John McCain, i love a chance to jump on him over an issue.

But on this one, even i have to say "wait a minute".

Before being critical of Bush over this one, I would want to hear his reasons "WHY" he is against it.

Because the first thought that pops in my mind is this, "Does this open the door for POW's to sue us in our courts?"
I do want them to have the right to challenge their captivity in some type of court.
But I do not want to wind up having every single person we capture going to court and sueing us, while we provide public defenders and tie up thousands of days and millions of dollars.

I do not know enough about this area of the Law / Constitution, to be sure.
But it might be that Bush is not wrong on this one.

Where Bush is wrong is in opposing better benefits for those veterans so that they do not have to sue Iraq for their survival.

So then things like war reparations would not be legal then either because a new government would be absolved of all responsibilities.

No doubt the administration doesnt want to support this case because they are worried about being sued themselves for violating the Geneva Convention.

I think it is a shame. We should hold the Iraqi government responsible for the treatment of American POWs.They have suffered no less than victims of terrorism who have been allowed to sue.
