A 2000 year old seed evacuated from the ancient Jewish fortress at Masada has produced a sapling which after 26 months has grown to a height of nearly four feet. The species of tree called the Judean date, (Phoenix dactylifera L.), is now extinct in Israel. Researchers at the Arava Institute of the Environment in Kibbutz Ketura, Israel hope to discover the medicinal properties of this ancient Judean date tree which is mentioned in Holy Scripture.
