The way I see it, they are quickly losing the battle of "foundamentalism" and are slowly coming to the conclusion that they have little power to stop the flow of progress in the Middle East. In the last 15 years, this region has gone through some extremely crushing blows.
With Sharia law flanking the region and running violently in Sudan and Afghanistan, the slaughter of non-Arabs and non-Muslims had taken its toll. With Osama Bin Laden having ties to both countries, his vision of Islam would have hundreds of millions of Muslims on a path directly into hell. Since Osama Bin Laden and his religious thugs took it upon themselves to define Islam to the world in accordance to their visions on 9/11, the Middle East has witnessed the creation of three democracies. In Afghanistan, the Taliban was shown to be nothing more than a militarily armed gang, easily dismissed while control and power was handed over to the Muslims who were victims of their reign. Saddam Hussein, sitting squarely in the middle, was easily removed and like Afghanistan, power and control was handed over to his Muslim victims. It was no surprise to witness Lebanon eventually voice for the removal of Syria from their borders and to embark on a democratic mission of change.
And during all of this, what did Muslims witness? Not the sole focused idea of American imperialism, in which soothed the Western protestors sentiments. Not the sole focused idea of Jewish conspiracy, in which soothed the Arab sentiment. They witnessed their own being given an opportunity to write the laws that would govern them. They witnessed their own cast ballots in fair elections. They witnessed their own take control of their destinies. But most of all, I believe many started to acknowledge the truth about their region. Who fights the Americans and the Afghani Muslim's democratic future? The Tali-Ban, who harbored the very man that insulted Islam on 9/11. Who fought the Americans and the Iraqi Muslim's democratic future? Saddam loyalists and Arab insurgents seeking a return of Sunni power. Who stands in the way of Lebanon's democracy being accepted by the UN? An internationally declared terrorist organization, in which destruction and death is the mission. Who stands to erupt the region into nuclear disaster? Iran, who constantly boasts on the destruction of another nation and funds that internationally declared terrorist organization in Lebanon.
In all cases, it is the fundamentalists, radicals, Islamic perverts, and terrorists who rally to fight against America and Israel. Well, if they fight for Islam, then what does this say about Islam? I believe this is becoming the question of the region. The decades long identity crisis within Islam is finally being addressed. Yes, it had to be forced, but it is happening.
Ultimately, they will have to acknolwedge that Israel and Israel's Muslims have been showing the example long before Lebanese, Iraqi, and Afghani voters went to the polls. Hate and rage has always been the obstacle and blinder. Yep, the Arab world is watching and possibly finally learning.
