You've just trapsed through Jordan. Central Amman is bearable with its wesern hotels, but just bearly. As you head west you drive through small towns where poverty is endemnic, mosquitos are the size of ping-pong balls, and women are rarely seen in public. You eventually arrive at the bridge that separates Jordan from Israel. It is unbearably hot and you sweat from places you never thought possible. You would kill for a cold beer. God help you if you have a Jewish sounding name. The Jordanian official in charge will definitely detain and question you.

Halfway across the bridge is the Israeli Customs checkpoint. You enter. Oh my God! It's air-conditioned! The second thing that you notice is the hair. The hair is everywhere and in every color and length. Female Israeli Border Patrol guards walk about in tank tops with cammo pants and big sunglasses. All sport a sidearm strapped to their leg. You don't mean to, but you stare.

Female Customs agents in sky-blue blouses check your paperwork and your baggage. All are very pleasant, multi-lingual, and drop dead gorgeous. You exit into Israel. Israeli girls and female tourists are everywhere. Hair is everywhere. You glance back across the bridge one last time and then quickly turn away. That ice cold mug of beer is calling.

I got to go to Israel when I was younger...for nearly free actually, despite not being Jewish I got to tag along with some Jewish friends through their synagogues trip. I got the same deal from El Al as they did and got free housing with them for the week. The El Al agents gave me some **** though, which at 15 was pretty intimidating.

Anyway, what stood out to me was primarily three things- fabulous weather (its like Southern California), NO mass transit (Tel Aviv doesn't even have a subway! or at least didn't then) and one million street cafes.

I'm sure it'd be different if I went now because at 22 I'd be mobile and able to do more stuff. And wouldn't have to hang out alone underage in a foreign city while all my friends were...doing whatever religious stuff it was that they were doing.

Oh and they speak English. That was cool.

Israeli trains look like ours, they all come from East Germany, I guess.

Yes, they do, even though when I've been there, Russian language helped me a lot, especially in Southern Israel.

I'm pretty good at convincing French people I'm Scottish...whom they seem to hate, but hate less then Americans.

My Scottish accent is excellent and my beard is Scotsmen red.

They are the nicest people ever.
They are very friendly, often very well educated and they have a sense of culture and a lot of humour.

Not many people know, but they have excellent modern music, too.

They look good.

I have met a lot of Russian people in my life, I have more Russian friends than German friends, I guess.
This is no surprise, because many people in the area where I live, are from Russia.
