ISIS Might Want to Stock Up on Depends, Because US Poised to Change ‘Boots on the Ground’ Policy

Foreign Policy reports:

In a major shift, the Obama administration is now willing to have U.S. troops take part in direct combat against the Islamic State, a move that could lead to American fatalities in Iraq and Syria and that poses political risks for a White House that had long vowed to keep U.S. forces out of the fight.

In testimony before the Senate Armed Services committee on Tuesday, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said that the U.S. “won’t hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL…or conducting such missions directly, whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground.” ISIL is an alternate acronym for the Islamic State, which is also known as ISIS or Daesh.

My thoughts are, if this is entirely true (and it looks like it is from recent actions) then Obama is getting baited into this conflict in a way he was politically is opposed to. Making him both a hypocrite in all criticism of all Republican action resulting in use of our military forces to date, but also extremely foolish for basically playing into the hands of Putin's game.

I doubt it will ever be acknowledged but I have to point out the irony of our Nobel Peace Prize winning President being *for* use of drone warfare in a series of nations, military action also in a series of nations causing instability from Libya to Syria to Iraq (even Afghanistan is not all that stable,) perhaps boots back on the ground in Iraq conducting military operations, and overall... just like his predecessor Bush 43.

Can't wait to see the liberal spin on Obama's military action is all good, but Republicans military action was all bad. In the mean time I hope more people realize that Obama is just another in a long line of Presidents engaged in a confusing and hypocritical foreign policy that is destine to cause down the road headaches.

So much for Saudi Arabia and other nations cleaning up their back yard...

Don't Feed the Reinoe.


To the extent that we want to do harm to ISIL, this is good. US troops on the ground need their accompany authorities expanded and targeting authorities pushed down as far as possible. Hopefully the CJSOTF-I will be able to get some, and there won't be any future Is-it-or-Isn't-it monkey dance from the Pentagon.

This is just a show to try and make people think the US government is actually fighting against ISIS when in fact they (and their allies) are supplying them weapons and funds to carry out their disgusting acts.

It rather exemplifies the fact the White House is distantly out of touch with the realities of the middle east. I recall his "no boots on the ground" and said at the time it was for domestic consumption, that sooner or later the US would be compelled to get into it. I suspect Obama had hoped to be able to stave off thius moment for a year or so.

SOF did the hostages rescue against ISIl..is that it? or more embedded like Iraqi trainers/advisors
(about 4k on the ground there) what force is the terms of "boots" used here?

We are fighting a war where the strategy is dependent on what the POTUS thinks will get him the least grief at home.

More to the point. The Russians are bombing in Syria. This is about Iraq.

And those are two different countries.

It is a known fact. Ever wondered why ISIS is still existing in the face of the worlds strongest air force? The place is not Vietnam, it is one of the most open and exposed environments on earth.

For training, i support, for calling in accurate air- artillery - I support- Arm the Kurds to the teeth. And let the Iraqi's spill their own blood.
Iraq in my opinion is destined to split along ethnic lines.

The air strikes are not as frequent as you believe. Only 2 in Syria since 22 Oct.

Nope. The worlds' strongest airforce isn't being unleashed, air power can't dominate territory, ISIL embeds itself into civilian populaces and uses semi-effective camouflage and concealment, and ISIL can replace a foreign fighter cheaper than we can replace a PGM.

The Administration isn't helping ISIL. It's just not willing to do much about it, because it lacks a strategy to deal with ISIL, and sort of hopes that it can get through the rest of it's time without having to.

Carter called the new strategy, “Raqqa, Ramadi, and raids,” referring first to the Islamic State’s de facto capital in Syria, followed by the Iraqi city of Ramadi that was taken by jihadist forces in May, and finally to the the potential new American ground role in the fight.

In Syria, Carter said the U.S. would continue advising and equipping Syrian opposition groups and Kurdish fighters while also launching new air raids against the Islamic State, particularly in and around Raqqa.

I don't see anything new..maybe more in Iraq, but Syria stys the same, and we already have "boots" in Iraq.

Then I guess the Russian air force is bombing only civilians then? *sigh*. The Russians are bombing the proxy army created by the west to over throw the Assad government in Syria.
