[h=1]Syria Wants Russian Businesses To Help Rebuild Country, As Assad Considers 'Resignation'[/h]
Syrians want Russian multinationals to help rebuild the country, once (and if) the smoke clears. At least this is the view from Russian politicians with skin in the game.

Assad, speaking through the state run Russian media, allegedly said he would allow for democratic elections or even resign if it would help Syria heal. That would give someone the chance to challenge Assad for the first time ever. This may very well be lip service, in order to show the West that Russia has Assad eating out of the palm of their hands.

Interesting. So, how will Russia do at nation building?
Is Assad serious about resigning, or does he just want the West to think Russia has him "eating out of the palm of their hands?"

Presumably they will not make the mistake the US did and sack all of the incumbent officials. Hopefully they will, as the US did, stay out of most rebuilding contracts, allowing the rest of the world to take a role (who am I kidding, of course they'll take nearly all contracts, that's the point of Assad's request).

If he's not serious, I think the rhetoric is aimed not so much at the West but the Russian populace, to convince them of just war and thus add to their political will.

I can't see any nation building ( at least infrastructure) by anyone until the war winds down.

I think the whole Syria situation is an unfortunate tragedy for the Syrian citizens. Syria is an ally of Russia, China and Iran. Of course they're going to defend its existence. Regime change in Syria is a long term USFP goal that doesn't change as often as we change presidents. China and Russia opposed all three attempts by Obama to secure a resolution for the use of force in Syria, citing the abuse of UNSCR 1973 in Libya. Yet Obama has had planes and drones in the air using force, advisors and trainers on the ground and now troops, all without a UNSCR and people here are critical of Russian policy regarding Ukraine!!!

And they say that Obama is soft on terrorism and being kicked around by Putin.

It depends on how one looks at it. Obama's ME policies have been at least as beneficial to Islamic extremists as Bush's were. China and Russia are both clearly fed up with US aggression, I wouldn't hold out for anymore support from either of them at the UN for further US military adventurism, that will be a big NO!
