Putin 'to send 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State' | Latest News | Breaking UK News & World News Headlines | Daily Star

The Russian leader is reportedly mounting an enormous military mission to take control of the terror group's stronghold of Raqqa. The city is the self-declared capital of ISIS in Syria and is patrolled by as many as 5,000 jihadi members. Putin is set to mobilise 150,000 reservists who he conscripted into the military earlier this week. An insider revealed: "It is very clear that Russia wants to sweep up the west of the country, taking Raqqa and all the oil and gas resources around Palmyra. "This is fast becoming a race to Raqqa – to secure the oil fields they need to cleanse the region of insurgents, and the IS capital is vital to do that." It comes a day after Russian jets obliterated nine ISIS outposts in just 24 hours using bunker-busting bombs.

I'll believe that when I see them in transport.

I doubt they'll send ground troops. meanwhile, the United States is going to state sponsor 5000 Arab terrorists to "take Raqqa":

Maybe they'll just pay the 5,000 that are already there and give them arms to use against the Russians.

News would be something from a reliable source. There is no source acknowledged in the Daily Star fantasy. It would be more likely he would use Kurds, Iraqis, Syrians and Iranians to cut ISIS supply lines and financing arms, wait a month and then combine armor with air assaults. Most of this will be in the desert and ISIS will have no place to go.

Re: Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

This is the British tabloid, not the Lebanon online paper. Syrian oilfields are in disarray -Syria doesn't export oil now, except a bit by ISIS..

Why would Putin go after ISIS before freeing up Assad? I don't believe this is true

Re: Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

I think that if Putin takes out both the Syrian rebels AND ISIS, that it'd be the best possible outcome from this Obama induced mess in Syria.

But something tells me that he'll just take out the Syrian rebels.

I didn't realize that at first. I won't use them as a source again.

Re: Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

This isn't going to happen.

If he doesn't try it he can't lose.

Re: Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

It would be better to take Assad out.
Taking out Assad is the worst option.

Greetings, DaveFagan. :2wave:

Sounds like a great plan to me! Since Assad is still the ruler in Syria, and he gave permission to Russia to be in Syria to help him save the country from the rebels, everything being done so far by Russia is perfectly legal, and no one can argue otherwise! Assad was not beheading people, or destroying ancient sites like ISIS has done! Fair is fair!

Plus, I read that 450 jihadists have surrendered and given their arms to officials in Dara'a Governance, which is a strategically important area in SW Syria.

And conversely The U.S. doesn't have Syria's permission to be in that country.

Why.?

It is a failed state. Assad has no legitimate say on whom to deny entry anymore.

I would be surprised to see Russia take on this commitment, even if it meant giving Putin yet another win over Obama.

No matter who ultimately wins Syria will not be a friend of the USA.

Agreed.

There is zero expectation any group fighting over there right now would be friendly to the US even if we installed them into power ourselves, and we know that is factual as even the Kurds have zero chance or desire to be in such position. Everyone else is some faction of an ideology that cannot stand, nor will they adopt, western governmental and social ideologies. We screwed this up the moment we decided al-Assad had to go... as behind the scenes we cannot stand his relations with Russia.

:agree: ... What gives us the right to arm rebels when non-combative Syrian women and children are among those being slaughtered! Bull**** on "collateral damage." I'm very angry and upset about this! And why did we deliberately bomb a hospital, of all places?

Assad is still the ruler of Syria, whether the U.S. likes it or not, so it is not a failed state, and he has every right to ask an ally for help, just as our allies do with us! I don't have to agree with Putin and the way he does things, but in this case he is operating openly for all the world to see, and since he isn't furtively sneaking into Syria, that's a BIG plus in many people's book!

If Russia wants to waste the lives of their men and their tax dollars in the middle east then let them.

This should give it some volume...

And would suggest Putin is not going to play nice..

Putin's Syria playbook draws on Ukraine, loathing for revolution - CNN.com

It appears Putin sees an opening to extend his influence across the region. He is not a man who makes many mistakes. Clearly he has waited a a long time, assessed the situation and figures there is a huge opening left by the Obama administration which he intends to exploit.

So far in their confrontations, it's Obama 0 and Putin 2.

That's huge number of troops. Makes me suspect they're not just there to fight ISIS.

I understand your line of thought, but disagree. The one time dictator is now no longer guaranteeing security in the country nor does he any longer even control most of the land. De facto he is a warlord among others albeit one of the most powerful. He also lost his legitimacy, when he stopped taking responsibility to protect his subjects and started killing them en masse to maintain his dynasty.

As for Putin, it is clear that he is a serious danger as he is propagating and driving us into a multi polar global security structure. This is dangerous, because these structures are always instable and will invariably lead to major war. To this strategy of multipolarization belongs active agitation and activities against r2p, continuous activities to weaken the USA and propaganda against the US. Russia has factually restarted the Cold War under today's circumstances. So it might be good to involve him in an extended war with proxies to waste him slowly. Whether it would make sense to eliminate Assad could be discussed under that aspect.
