Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'[W:65]

Re: Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

I don't even know how to respond to this. It is patently absurd as a response to a question of how you impart legitimacy on a government like Assad's, and I hope you reconsider how you got from the discussion we were having to what you decided to write.

(Daddy) Assad participated in the 1963 Syrian coup d'état which brought the Syrian Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party to power, and was appointed Commander of the Syrian Air Force by the new leadership. In 1966, Assad participated in a second coup, which toppled the traditional leaders of the Ba'ath Party, and brought a radical military faction headed by Salah Jadid to power. Assad was appointed defense minister by the new government. In 1970 Assad seized power by toppling Jadid, and appointed himself the undisputed leader of Syria in the period 1970–71.

It's disturbing how a global foreign policy **** show in the region has absolved how much these guys were really ****ing bad and deserve more than half the credit.

Left, right, it doesn't matter, those blokes weren't so bad apparently.

Re: Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

Hey, I totally get all that (no sarcasm this time). But again, going back to legitimacy, I don't see how Assad is anymore of a legitimate ruler than Saddam was or Nasser was - they or their folks seize power and then maintain it for their own benefit and for the benefit of their own support groups, while using fear and violence to maintain control over a population. How does that make Assad any more "legitimate" a ruler than ISIS (and of course I'm not suggesting ISIS is better etc)?

Heya CJ. :2wave: Wasn't Pelosi, Hillary and other Democrats running around calling Assad a reformer? What happened? Did they all of a sudden flip flop and change their tune again? When will Democrats ever get anything Right overseas?

You made the point of saying that Assad's father was corrupt - I did not dispute that - but you went on to say that his son was also, which I did not agree with. Too many stories over the years seem to disprove that since he was often referred to as being one of the most "western thinking" rulers in the region.

My examples of family dynasties was to show that it was not unique to the ME, but that it seems to occur any time a family has wealth and influence, no matter where they are. Children are expected to carry on the family name in politics, business, real estate, show business, and many other areas, but it doesn't necessarily mean their way is identical to the one who made the first move, because time and what's going on around the world sometimes changes thinking.

Assad is a murdering tyrant.

Greetings, Jack. :2wave:

He may be now that he's fighting the rebels, but it sure doesn't square with all I've read about him over the past several years.

He was always a murderous tyrant, just like his father. He just wasn't a religious fanatic. He's an old fashioned dictator.

Russia already has troops on the ground. Don't mess with Putin. Game over Obama!

Let no one delude themselves. Assad Jr. maintained the repressive internal policies and infrastructure of his father.

Prior to the outbreak of open violence, there existed at least 25 different security/military interrogation/torture facilities in Syria.

The incident that initiated open civil war against Bashar Assad began with the arrest and torture of children for painting anti-government graffiti on the walls of a school.

Daraa: The spark that lit the Syrian flame

Hundreds of Syrians march in Damascus in March 2011, chanting "Daraa is Syria" as protests spread throughout the country. The beginning of the Syrian Civil War.

Lets not forget that Muslim Brotherhood was the driving force behind the protests. Also it was the Sunni in Syria going after Christians and burning their homes and churches down. Which you can bet on how much the MB was involved in that too.

Taking advantage of activists.....the MB's usual.

Re: Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

I think that if Putin takes out both the Syrian rebels AND ISIS, that it'd be the best possible outcome from this Obama induced mess in Syria.

But something tells me that he'll just take out the Syrian rebels.

Both threaten Assad don't they?

Re: Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

Russia lacks the means to logistically support 150,000 trained troops. In addition, they might not have that number of deployable troops to start with. Russian law forbids deploying conscripts with out a declaration of war. Putin tried to get around this for his Ukrainian adventure by asking / coercing consripts to sign special overseas contracts. When a good number refused, he started hiring mercenaries and press ganging convicts.

Sources, please

Good question. While it's not been covered heavily in the media, which has focused on Assad's barrel bombing and gassing of the rebels instead, I wonder if ISIS really is threatening the Assad regime or not. I would be surprised to find out that they'd just as soon take over all of Syria while they are land grabbing.
