From The Washington Post:

In a fiery speech Saturday before a mammoth rally in Gaza City marking the 25th anniversary of the founding of Hamas, Khaled Meshal, the political leader of the militant Islamist group, pledged that it would never recognize Israel and called for an Islamic Palestinian state on the territory of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip...
“Liberating Palestine, all of Palestine, is a duty, a right and a goal,” he added.

This reaffirmation of Hamas's goal to eliminate Israel comes as no surprise. Hamas's charter declares:

The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgment Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any king or president, nor all the kings and presidents, neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that.

To date, Hamas has never accepted a two-state solution. There is little indication that Hamas is likely to moderate its positions anytime soon.

Weren't we told by the radical leftists that Hamas are just a bunch of care bears who will shoot rainbows from their bellies the moment Israel lifts the so called siege from Gaza?!?!?

...yet the pro-palestinian crowd will still say it's the Israelis' fault that there are no negotiations...

Actually Hamas has dropped the part that calls for the destruction of Israel from its charter. (Hamas drops call for destruction of Israel from manifesto | World news | The Guardian)

This isn't to say that they are suddenly good guys, they are fuc-ing crazy violent psychopaths, but they have edited their charter.

Sure. Except that they didn't really, and they repeat their aims at every opportunity.

Oh, and for the record, all you cited was their election platform and therir attempt to sanitize themselves for western (i.e., your) edification. Their charter is exactly the same as it always was.

The proverbial devil is in the details. Mr. Meshal's speech, which referenced his desired boundaries for a Palestinian state and included an explicit claim over Haifa, speaks for itself.

Moreover, Hamas insists on a return of Palestinian refugees and their descendants to Israel, a situation that would render Israel a Jewish minority state and effectively allow for a use of the democratic process to engineer the end of Israel.

Being a radical does not mean you support theocratic parties/regimes...

l used to like arafat ,but dislike hamas ..

You'd love to see someone say that, of course no one is saying that so you have to pretend people are to justify your disrespect for them.

Not in theory no, but seems like in practice that is a different matter. There seem to be huge swathes of the left that, for one reaosn or another, support and align themselves with very illiberal movmenets which are sufficiently anti-U.S. or anti-Israel.

Sure, you could be one of the principled ones, no doubt there are some of those around, but doesn't seem like you are driving that particular ship, Commerade.

l used to like arafat ,but dislike hamas ..

Arafat and Hamas were virtually indistinguishable, except for their religious/political outlooks. And Arafat's bathing habits.

Their platforms on Israel, and their preferred methods to achieve their obejctives, were exactly the same.

Sorry, I believe Hamas was to be more interested in roads and bridges and garbage pickup once they won local elections.

You know, on account of the rainbows and such.

What ido says is entirely accurate, he is simply using hyperbole to make his point in an entertaining way.

And it is hard to give people who support Hamas less respect than they deserve. Less hard, but still difficult, in regards to people who are repeatedly taken in by hamas' pending "moderation".

Who here supports Hamas?

We have a phrase in Hebrew "a donkey jumps ahead". I didn't point my finger at anyone who posts here though there were people here in the past who suggested Israel should talk with Hamas and that Hamas will be willing to come to a two state solution. There are many extremists in Israel who think talking with Hamas will solve the problem.

Meshal had been gone from the strip longer than i've been alive and he's come "home" to a Kings welcome. Like he left just yesterday and times stood still. It's been 45 years. It's crazy when you stop and think about it.

He's just being a politician. Kinda like when Romney said he was going to end Obamacare (in spite of being in the pocket of several leading insurers who like the program). Since when does anyone take political rah-rahing seriously?

It's probably not something they want to keep broadcasting, esp. when Palestinians routinely suffer atrocities from IDF security forces, who insist on violating their borders.

HAMAS says it wants to destroy Israel for the same reason that GOP pols say they want to create jobs for middle class Americans. It's medicine to the ears (and nothing more).

You effort of trying to equate the repeal of obamacare with a promise to eliminate the country of Israel is a little silly. Don't you think...??
