Odd Things About Hybrid Cars

by LowDown on 02-27-13 at 01:42 PM
I'm speaking here of the first generation Prius and Ford Fusion Hybrids among others. Different brands of hybrids can be different.

I'd always thought of hybrid cars as cars with an electric motor and big battery attached to the engine. But hybrid cars of this type are way different.

One odd thing about a hybrid car is that when you start it the engine doesn't come on. It turns on later when needed. Lights flash and an indicator tells you when the car is ready to

Scientific Questions in Climate Science

by LowDown on 11-10-12 at 02:04 PM
Here in no particular order are some of the issues that skeptics of anthropogenic global warming theory are raising:

1. Global climate models have never been proven to have predictive power and are unlikely to ever be accurate in their current form. These models can be tweaked to reproduce known climate data but when tested prospectively, on their ability to predict what will happen, they fail rather badly.

To the extent that the trend up to 15 years ago was a straight

2016: Obama's America

by LowDown on 09-23-12 at 01:05 PM
2016: Obama's America is the latest foray by conservatives into political film making, an art that Michael Moore used with some success earlier.

The movie is all about Obama's relationship with his father, a guy he really hardly knew. His father was an anti-colonialist, and Obama's first book, "Dreams of My Father", was all about how he came to be obsessed by his father's ideas. All through the movie Obama himself his heard quoting passages from this book (taken from the

Looking Into Climate Science

by LowDown on 09-20-12 at 09:30 PM
One way to approach the controversies in climate science is to get the raw data and analyze it in a way that one trusts, in a way that makes sense, if there are suspicions about the methods used. Even better would be to collect the raw data oneself, but that's not possible.

The conclusion I reach with this exercise is that GISS's (Goddard Institute for Space Science at NASA) analytical methods for processing weather station data don't introduce a significant amount of bias at least

Where's the Warming?

by LowDown on 09-09-12 at 11:30 AM
Atmospheric CO2 levels have increased even more than the IPCC predicted in 2001. If their predictions were correct there should have been an even bigger increase in atmospheric temperatures than they predicted, but over the 11 years since their report was published there has been no increase in those temperatures.

Why? What is missing?

The core of every climate model the IPCC uses is the idea that for every unit of increase of temperature caused by CO2 there will be
