Early Tuesday in Indianapolis, an African-American woman was being carjacked in front of her home in her working class neighborhood. She ran back in the house, told her husband, who is also black, and they called the police to report the robbery. That seemed to be the right and safe thing to do.As the police pulled up, the husband, who was later identified as 48-year-old Carl Williams, opened the garage to their home and was immediately shot in the gut by police.
They claim they believed he was the robber and that because he had a firearm of his own, he was shot in self-defense. Officials identified the officer who shot Williams as nine-year veteran cop Christopher Mills.
He, of course, was not the robber. In fact, police have yet to even say if they caught the robber. Since they dusted the car for fingerprints, it appears that the actual man committing a crime got away and the man who wanted to protect his wife and family was instead shot and currently fighting for his own life in the hospital.

Women being car jacked in her driveway, runs away to tell husband, husband comes outside in attempt to protect her, husband gets shot by police.

It might be that shooting first and asking questions later doesn't actually work all that well.

Incompetent boobs. Cops should have to earn the privilege of carrying a firearm. 3 years on the job with no incidents of bad behavior at a minimum with plenty of training

You probably missed the whole '9 year veteran' thing.

No I saw it. My plan isn't perfect but I bet if we took a look at his training it is woefully lacking.

This is a sucky situation. Put yourself in both persons shoes.

-You are the home owner. You walk out of your garage and see a man standing there in the dark armed. You raise your weapon to shoot to defend yourself.

-You are the cop. You respond to a call where the homeowner states they were robbed by a man AT GUNPOINT and when you arrive, the car is there, lights on, and a man emerges from the garage with a gun drawn and raising it to you.

Both are 'justified' in the scenario. Sounds like preliminarily there are a loit of things that should have been done differently. One...dood should have stayed on the phone or at most, stayed in the house. 911 operator should have told him to stay in the home and that cops are on the scene. Dood should have informed the 911 operator that he was armed. 911 operator should have in formed the law enforcement that the homeowner was on premises and armed. Responding officers should have lit up the scene the moment they saw the car in the driveway with the lights on.

You 'bet' that based on what? ANY PERSON could reasonably assume that he was under attack if they encounter an armed individual in the dark raising a weapon towards you.

There are a lot of things that should have been done differently. But in THIS scenario...it sounds like there are no bad guys...just a lot of bad decisions.

This incident sounds like a tragic, but honest mistake.

But I do have to ask whatever happened to cops yelling 'Freeze this is the police, drop your gun' BEFORE they opened fire?

Sarcastic response: "Those cops got killed by people who didn't freeze and drop their gun. Now we're just left with the cops who shoot first. Darwinism, ftw!"

That has too much truth in it to be funny......

That's a fine idea for times when the suspect isn't pointing a gun in your direction.
