Michigan State Police To Conduct Roadside Drug Tests In Pilot Program

But coming up with a test to get impaired drivers off the road will be far more difficult than the blood alcohol tests used to test for drunk drivers, according to the group. While tests show the ability to drive gets worse as blood alcohol rises, laboratory studies show the same is not necessarily true with increased levels of THC, the main chemical component in marijuana, in the blood. One driver with high levels of THC might not be impaired, while another driver with very low levels can be impaired.

"There is understandably a strong desire by both lawmakers and the public to create legal limits for marijuana impairment, in the same manner as we do with alcohol," said Marshall Doney, AAA's CEO. "In the case of marijuana, this approach is flawed and not supported by scientific research. It's simply not possible today to determine whether a driver is impaired based solely on the amount of the drug in their body."

The study was criticized by the National Cannabis Industry Association, which pointed to a different study, by the Transportation Department, which found that drivers who drivers who are drunk have a much greater increase in the risk of being in an accident than drivers who used marijuana.

"All this report really shows is that more people in Washington State are likely consuming cannabis, and thus might have some THC in their systems at the time of an accident. But since having THC in your system tells us nothing about your potential impairment, it would be like a report showing how many people involved in accidents had drunk a beer in the last week," said Taylor West, deputy director of the group.

i read all of that

but what i also read is that more people are DYING

see...that kinda seems more important to me, than someone's right to smoke a joint, or drown their sorrows in a pint a gin

i dont care if you are high from cocaine, meth, MJ, or just plain drunk

i dont want you on the road where you can kill me, my family, or my friends

if i could get a breathalyzer in every car made i would do it in a heartbeat

eat, drink, party....do what you want.....

but stay the **** off the roads after

This nonsense yet again? Well aware of those Chicken Little links, thanks.

A. Statistically insignificant.
B. 'Marijuana related' in no way implies 'Marijuan-caused'.

There simply is no credible data that it's becoming an issue in any substantive manner.

What else so you have?

About the same number of people are dying. They are now testing for thoroughly for drugs in the system. What your links show is that "more" people are found to have marijuana in their system (this wasn't tested for as well in the past, so there is no good and established baseline to compare to), but it cannot be said whether or not that had any bearing on the accident.

Perchance, but there's a difference in pulling people for dangerous driving and bringing in...what was it now? Drug recognition experts? lol.

Functional impairment, regardless of reason, is one thing. But this is just addition search and excuse for higher fines and punishment. It's a fundraising law.

Here it is again

LANSING (WWJ) – A one-year pilot program set up in five counties will allow Michigan State Police to conduct roadside drug tests.First Lt. Michael Shaw says if a driver is pulled over for a traffic offense and shows signs of being under the influence of drugs –specially trained “drug recognition experts” will conduct traditional field sobriety tests.
Next, the officers will use a saliva-based testing to check drivers to see if they’ve smoked marijuana or used heroin or cocaine.
“Were seeing throughout the state of Michigan there’s an increase in both drugged driving and drugged driving fatalities,” Shaw told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Zahra Huber.
The program was approved in legislation passed in Lansing as statistics show the total number of traffic crashes involving drugs has reached a decade-high in Michigan

The part in italics is important.

It does not say that it was for every driver.

It is the same as the sobriety tests for alcohol.

Hi nanny state, glad to see Big Brother is here to protect me.

Who are these "drug recognition experts", lol?

K9s I'd guess - they alert, cops search.

Kiss your 4A right away in MI.

Just like that illegal stop and frisk bull**** in NYC.

No, it's evidently GIANT BIG GOVERNMENT and a lol"HYPOCROTIC" thing if you support it or something. I dunno, the detractors are near tin foil hattery level or need a bridge to sleep under.
