99% of police---- do their jobs excellently, save lives, help protect the community---most people shrug, occasionally thank them, otherwise ignore them.

1% of police---either are assholes or make one mistake---some people blame all police for them, talk trash about all police officers.

Some people are just flat out ungrateful.

They are generally compensated generously at the public expense and are additionally feted with public accolades, parades, community dinners, endorsements, etc. I think there is far too much thin skin among the 'blue line'.

I might differ on the number ... I would guess maybe half of them do their jobs excellently and that might be a bit generous. an almost equal portion to a half hearted job but are not malicious.
The remaining that are malicious to the public is a small percentage but it might be a bit more than 1% sadly enough.
Still it would suck to be one. nearly everyone hates you. Starting pay is pretty pathetic in most places. The police officer in my state makes about 49k. considering the risk it out to be a bit higher.

Yeah, because they've protected---and continue to protect----said public.

It's not surprising people will show gratitude occasionally, especially when the officer in question is a local boy.

Yes they do and we reward them handsomely for that service.

Yet people still demonize all officers for the actions of a small minority, despite that service.

It's not that, although it doesn't help the situation. (Still typing, please don't quote yet)....

You ok?

And yeah, people do that a lot of the time. Mostly because they don't seem to understand the concept that, like in every other profession, there are some assholes, but that doesn't mean all the members of said profession are assholes.

No I am not alright. The system timed me out before I could finish my thought and now I am so pissed at how often this happens I don't want to respond anymore. :2mad:

Some specific groups of selfish, intolerant, authoritarian, violent, racist, and hypocritical people do..

No, 99% of police do NOT do their jobs excellently. If they did then they wouldn't look the other way when their fellow bad officers abused their authority. No, the cops who actually do their jobs excellently don't last on the force long.

I think there are a number of distinct criticisms you could make of police.

Some police use speeding tickets as revenue generators. Others argue that enforcing the speed limit is part of their job. Myself, i'm more worried about unsafe driving and that's often not applicable to driving 5mph over the speed limit.

Some police exercise an unnecessary use of force. To some degree, i can empathize as they deal with highly charged situation where their lives face serious threats. In other cases, they go too far. I'd like to think those cases are a ridiculously small minority.

But in my area, the police are really good. They seem to genuinely try to help people, not nickel and dime them with technicalities. I like to think the vast majority of police are like this, and i don't think there's a valid reason to dislike police on the whole. On the other hand, i recognize that certain citizens feel justified in requesting more oversight, such as a body-cam.

I don't remember ever getting timed-out.

Unless I log-out, I'm in for many, many, days. I've even left posts sitting in the composition box that I wasn't sure I wanted to send for long periods of time - hours, and never had problems. I may have gotten logged-out on rare occasion, but can't say I ever lost a post. Right now I came back to DP after being off for several hours and I still was logged-in!

Could the problem be your ISP is dropping-out?

Or, some setting in your forum preferences?

They have loyalty to their fellow officers. Sometimes this loyalty is misplaced. However, it is understandable why people look the other way, not just in police work, but in other jobs as well.

Speaking of excellent cops :

This officer deserves a huge raise.

They are putting their loyalty to their fellow officers above their duty to the law. To their duty to the job we pay them to do. I'm not saying I would be any better if I were a cop. I likely wouldn't. And I'm not saying it makes them bad people. But it makes them bad cops.

True enough, in part at least. At the same time, other than misplacing their loyalty upon occasion, they still do the job well. The guilty parties are arrested; citizens are projected; etc

Where are these figures coming from?

Some people just have a pro-cop agenda.

The more police are recorded, the more instances of blatant abuse of the citizenry become publicly available, the less credible the claim that "99%" of cops are "good cops" becomes.

And another thing you avoided addressing: all the cops you call "good cops" who witnessed the "bad cops" commit their disgusting crimes against the citizenry, but stayed silent. Those aren't "good cops" either. And since police tend to work in groups of several when things go down, you've got a whole lot involved in cover-ups and/or simply remaining silent.

It's done that to me, but it usually saves the text of the post if I immediately log back in (rather than trying to click forward or back).

Though I've started moving long posts over into Word to draft before posting, for this reason.

It's ok for you when the target is muslims, Orly, so I'm not sure what the whine is about.

Something obviously went right over your head.. I'm not the one whining about police..

I wonder how well you would do with a Muslim LEO who stated he has been on a Jihad for the past 20 years?

Depends on weather or not he is an Eskimo..

Well, that was entertaining. Cops should always be able to handle that sort of situation without going off the rails. If some 12-year old sounding girl spouting nonsense gets an officer worked up, adrenaline flowing, etc., they may not be cut out for the job? That girl breaking down at the end was too funny, great finale. What was she saying, she's a "free citizen", she can be in the country but doesn't have to follow it's laws. Call your superior, they will tell you the same thing. wth? Later when her arm is being twisted to cuff her, because this bitch is going in the back of his cruiser at this point Officer: "This is pain compliance, its not supposed to feel good"
