North Korea Sentences U.S. College Student Otto Warmbier To 15 Years Hard Labor

I wonder what the slogan was? what string of words would the friendship united church pay $10,000, and now $200,000 they promised him if he got caught, for a poster of?

I'll never understand the mindset of anyone who goes there.

Someone in the comments section put it best: put yourself in the lion's mouth and don't be surprised if you get bit.

Among students in the foreign relations schools, there are always a small percentage that love to live dangerously by visiting these kind of black-box countries. Kind of like how some people enjoy the adrenaline of skydiving or rock climbing. I suppose there is a certain level of mystique and intrigue about going into forbidden places, but it just isn't worth it.

Still feel sorry for the guy... 15 years hard labor is a long time, and you know they're going to toss some brainwashing in there too.

What in the hell is wrong with people? We issue State Department warning after warning telling people you can be arrested for basically nothing and there is absolutely nothing anyone can do about it.

Sorry, it is just ****ing stupid for anyone to take the risk.

It's a big world out there. And news about NK detaining someone is in the news almost every single year, year after year.

Go somewhere else. There's a million other places. How stupid and hard headed does someone have to be to go there?

They are morons. We had a teacher here that travelled in Afghanistan and Pakistanin 2005, I think, and talked about how wonderful the people were there and made a big thing about his travels in a dangerous area. Some acted like it would have been horrible if something happened to him and I think I was teh only one to say that it was his fault if it did for going into such a bad place. There are just those types of people out there.

but that's the way it is in america too - largest per capita prison population by a mile. Out of 6,000 westerners who visit NK every year, this is the one who got bagged by the men in black. Seems more risky in america than north korea

if i can turn your question on itself, what the hell is wrong with people who stay here?

I find it pathetic and not at all surprising that everyone is attacking this kid for being dumb, as if that makes the sentence deserved. I mean if that's all it takes, we better round up every other college kid in our own country

So, I take it you're going to leave.

I think that people in American prisons are there for a lot more than trying to swipe an item from a hotel room.

i'm not the one calling people idiots for being victims of brutality. It happens all the time here, but we call them 'criminals' or turn a blind eye, but whatever mental hoops make posters here feel superior

i'm not going to n korea because their internet sucks and people everywhere are starving and i hear they have small dicks, not because i feel less safe

North Korea, where the slightest infraction has dire consequences.

the data doesn't bear that out, as 6000 westerners visit there annually. They chose him, possibly at random, as their token diplomatic hostage for this year

stealing from a hotel in the US and attempting to board a plane with the stolen object can bring dire consequences too. Or hell, even if you own the thing. Try carrying your medical weed across state lines and see what happens

I don't think that ANYBODY is saying that the sentence is deserved... they ARE saying that knowing that such idiotic sentences can and ARE handed out makes a person an idiot for putting themselves into that situation.
