Cop caught pepper spraying bikers taken off the street, faces investigation | Fox News

A Fort Worth police officer caught on camera pepper spraying a group of bikers has been removed from the field and placed on desk duty pending an investigation, Fox 4 reports.

Video recorded by one of the bikers shows a FWPD officer had a driver in a Dodge Ram truck pulled over on the side of Interstate 20 on Sunday. A group of motorcyclists pass by as the officer gets out of his vehicle, and that's when he pulls out his pepper spray and aims the spray at the bikers.

Brittany Botello and her truck passengers were hit by the pepper spray blow back, but they were not the target of the spray.

"He sprays them first and then sprays everybody in the truck and it came into the truck because I was the driver and I’m six months pregnant and I just started… everybody started choking,” said Brittany Botelli.

Terry McKenzie, a passenger in the truck, said they told the officer they were choking, but he said he was just spraying the bikes and didn’t apologize for the spray getting on their group.
I say subject him to pepper spray, then fire his ass.

Mad that they don't move a lane over as one is supposed to in that situation, he attempts to cause a motorcycle pileup?

Psychotic idiot.

Unless some other information comes out couldn't the argument be made that is attempted murder? I would think attempting to blind someone operating a vehicle, particularly a motor cycle, would fall under that category.

They not only weren't moving over as required by law, they weren't even slowing down to 20 mph below the speed limit. I don't have any sympathy for them. His action probably weren't the best way to handle it but I wouldn't fire him for it; maybe have wash the Chief's car, that's about it. If I had to put him on a desk job I would have him get the license numbers off the bikes in the videos and let him have the honor of writing them all up and sending them their court summons.

If you sprayed a cop through his window while he was driving I'm quite sure you would be charged for serious safety violations, if not attempted murder.

Not interested in dumb analogies, but thanks for your concerns. Police work is high stress and low pay, so don't expect the TV versions of cops to be prevalent; they earn a lot of slack, despite the bedwettiing Burb Brat sniveling on message boards about them.

If the bikers deserved the pepper spray then why didn't the cop get back in his car and chase them down?

Sometimes you can't move over.

There was a white truck in the inside lane next to the bikers which has to be brought into account. The law in our state is you pull over to the next lane if SAFE to do so.

The slowing down 20 mph is a new one to me. If possible do slow down but be aware of people behind you. Just because you see the cop doesn't mean the person behing you texting does.

It is suppose to be all about safety. All about safety on the public highways. Spraying pepper spray to a group of moving bikes it just butt ass stupid. There was no regard to safety, this was all about one short man's complex.

These were bikers, not burb brats. This could have gone really bad, because these types just might cross the line by jumping off their bikes and putting the cop in the hospital for that. Lucky for his health they only took a video. I don't support such violent actions, but these people usually aren't the type that crouch in fear. The cop deserves maximum punishment for what he did; drawing mace is like drawing a gun. There was NO immediate threat of injury to him.

What he did was so reckless and dangerous that I'd even push for him to go to prison. Depending on the state you live in, wearing face protection and a helmet isn't a requirement and if he would have caused even one of those motorists in the front to fall over, it could have caused a chain reaction that could have seriously injured or killed some of those guys.

If they committed a moving violation you cite them for it. You don't do something that could cost them or others around them their lives. It would be akin to a police officer seeing a car speeding and instead of turning on his lights and pulling them over the cop just immediately performs the pit maneuver.

Unless you are saying that he could have tossed out the stop-spike strip in front of them as well your conclusion is literally stupid.

That ****er didn't earn that much slack. That's quite apparent.

Sometimes you can't move over.

1. There does appear to be space for them to move over, but

2. I am fairly certain that if you cannot move a lane over, you're supposed to slow down to 20, and that this is part of a uniform law passed in every state.

Either way.... that guy needs his badge yanked.

No, that would be below the minimum speed limit which is at least 40 on an Interstate. Yes to the yank.

How did you determine they weren't slowing down to the required speed?

If they were doing the correct speed then they are not required to move over to the next lane.

Well, I was sort of right:

"The Texas Transportation Code 545.157 requires drivers nearing stopped emergency vehicles-with lights activated -to either slow down or change lanes. The law states a driver must either vacate the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle if the road has multiple lanes traveling in the same direction or slow down 20 miles per hour below the speed limit. (If the speed limit is below 25 mph the driver must slow down to 5 mph.). Emergency vehicles include police, emergency medical service and fire vehicles.

A violation is punishable by a maximum fine of $200. If the violation results in property damage, the maximum fine increases to $500. If the violation results in bodily injury, the offense is enhanced to a Class B misdemeanor. The law was passed in the Texas Legislature and went into effect Sept. 1, 2003."
