Unable to stop criminals, Texas cops now pull you over for "driving safely" ...

They are advertising it on TV. Doubt they'd take your complaint seriously.

BTW: I'm not sure they are running plates or checking IDs in this case. They did show one rather hefty Black woman who was pissed she got pulled over...then the money came out. :)
I doubt they would, too. Still should be said, though.

If a thug cop pulled me over because I was driving safely id have to resist the urge to punch him in the nose. This is in reality a fishing expedition and a waste of time for those pulled over.

This isn't new. Some localities have tried this as a form of positive reinforcement in an attempt to promote safer driving. I know it would be upsetting for me! I hate Starbucks coffee. It is nasty. I don't know why y'all drink it.

I have rethought my position slightly. I got a gift card for there from work and had a cup of egg nog latte. That is the only thing I like there. That's it lol.

God Forbid they reward you for doing good things right? And you wouldn't punch him. I mean...why would you? Free money or jail? You pick.

. I said I'd resist the urge. I don't want or need his stinking $100. How about they do something useful and drop it in a SA kettle? Of course that wouldn't help their fishing campaign.

Sounds like they need to lay off some officers if they've got nothing better to do than busy work.

Oh dear Sweet Lord. This is my first post back from a short and needed break from the politics.

Are you ****ing kidding me? You are really bitching about "big brother" giving you free **** for being a good citizen? I mean it would be one thing if you were insulted that they gave you certificates to a coffee shop that grinds the beans for doo doo flavored beans. But you aren't. I tell you what...turn down the FREE MONEY like you have the friggin right to do. Is that too much to ask?

Never mind that you anti coppers NEVER have good solutions on how to handle REAL crime problems save 2 things: "legalize muh pot" and "body cams."

Your time must not be worth much to you. If a cop pulled me over, checked my ID and came back and told me there was no reason for it, I'd sound off on him.
'Course, there's always the conservative justification, "If you're not guilty of anything you have nothing to worry about!"

I wouldn't do it right there to the cop's face. While justified, I don't think that's a wise move. The mayor and chief would sure hear about it afterward, though.

Hahaha. Like liberals aren't trampling rights. And all libertarians want is to feed society to a different breed of tyrant.

if there is no probable cause to pull you over but the cop then finds something amiss-like a bag of reefer in the front seat

guess what-MOTION TO SUPPRESS granted

(of course you are still out maybe 100 bucks of herb) and 1500 dollars for the attorney to file the MTS

With a population of 140, how many cops do you suppose Lakeview has?

Be smarter with your pot then. Still illegal.

I was merely giving some free and accurate legal advice. I stopped my sporadic use of weed 10 years before Jerry died

And his time is just as wasted as mine. And a lesson in taxation and authoritarianism is learned by at least one person.

Captain Trips himself. Lots of great musicians died too early (Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, Sandy Denny, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Pigpen, etc etc) but Garcia is the one I really miss. He had local ties, his widow was a friend of several people I know well

One of the few, Jerry Garcia. He was sixties in a way nobody else could be- wasted, avant-garde, and accomplished, all at once.

yeah and though I never met him, friends of mine-conservative types who initially were predisposed to judge the man negatively who met him in Cincinnati all said he was a very charming guy who was interesting to talk to and had zero arrogance. That confirms what I knew-a guy i went to law school tended bar in SF and Garcia would come in and play once or so a month and he would take all the money people would throw in his guitar case and give it to the staff.

but back to car stops-its a bad idea IMHO because of the apprehension it could cause

Texas LEO's do an excellent job, want to see cops overwhelmed go to Detroit or Chicago.
Good for them I am glad to see people being reward for good driving, amazing anyone would have an Issue with that.

Then why don't they mail the gift certificates? Red light cameras well-illustrate that the police are experienced at contacting motorists by mail.

Thanks. :)

It would be a much better idea if they didn't use it as a pretext to find out if the driver has warrants out for their arrest. That is what the issue that people are having is. Not that cops are pulling over good drivers and giving them a "reward". (though I do think giving them something more practical would be better...not everyone drinks coffee.) If the cops just pulled them over, got out of their car, walked up to the driver side window and handed them the certificate without asking them any questions and just saying "thanks for driving safely ma'am/sir" and then left, then I doubt very seriously anyone would have an issue with it.

Honestly, pro law enforcement as I am, I wouldn't care for this, even if they didn't try to ask me questions. There are always risks to being pulled out of the stream of traffic and risks to having to pause on the side of the road, both for the folks in the car and the cop doing the pulling over and a gift card just doesn't seem worth the risk.

Unreal. :doh

What an asshole crooked way to spy on people and I would tell the cop to keep that Starbucks **** and tell him he just wasted moments of my life on a bull**** spy move. I bet this isn't even legal. They can't pull you over without probable cause and I would not give them my license unless they told me what violation I committed.

I would. Who the heck needs that heart attack? Nobody likes getting pulled over and you always wonder why even if you arent doing anything wrong.I dont need a 'carrot' to be a decent citizen and a safe driver. I'm on my way somewhere and it's not even worth my time.

Esp today with cops shooting people for no reason...and let's face it...from their perspective (and justifiably so)...every car stop is potentially hazardous.

Bah humbug! lol
