This is the symbol in question, it's a LE patch with a coat of arms that includes the union jack of Great Britain, a Fleur de Lis, and some other symbol I don't recognize, in quadrants.
The quadrants represent the nations that historically have ruled Alabama - clockwise from upper left: France, Spain, Confederacy (may or may not have been a nation depending on one's viewpoint), and Britain; the shield in the center represents the US.
