Well I was walking my dog tonight and walking around this back area of my apartment complex. It is generally well lit, but there are areas that are not. One of these happens to be a maintenance shed. Well I walked by it so my dog could **** in her favorite day time place and I heard a loud thunk which got my hackles up. I turned and saw a guy about 15 yards away who saw me at the same time. He was hopping on a bicycle and riding off. And he had an arm full of goodies and Tried to hide his face.

He had that look of an addict. Skinny and gross. Well I'm armed as always, but I'm not getting Into it with this guy and I meandered away keeping myself in a way that I could keep eyes on him leaving. I wandered around for a few minutes out in an area in the light and went back and checked to see if I did see a burglary. The lock was busted off and it normally isn't like that.

So now. Let me ask: would you call the police right away? I don't know if I should or not. I'm probably just gonna notify management. I'm certainly smart enough to know the guy is gone now.

i would call the cops.

Good move on keeping the gun where it belongs.

I would've dialed 911 immediately on my cell, so the cops could get a description while he was still in the area.

I would have done the same as you, unless it was a burglary of a friends home.

If it was the burglary of my home or a friend's home then I would have gotten on MY bike and followed him while calling it in with my cell phone.

I would have called 911.

If that's all you do then it's just a big waste of the cops' time. There's nothing they can do.

You have to help the cops somehow to make it worth their while.

like what you saw, when you saw it, what the dude looked like, and what you remember about his bike?

yeah. that kind of stuff can be pretty useful.

I wouldn't have engaged; I would've called the cops and given a description. Maybe a patrol car could spot him before he reached wherever he was going.

Yep, I'd call the cops, too.

Lovely ladies like yourself are NOT supposed to engage. First of all a CCW permit is not a permit to stop property crime.

Secondly unless you are a female MMA champion, taking on a male or even getting his attention could be lethal for you.

Actually the police don't want any of us whether male or female to engage criminals. They just want us to observe and report, like Helix said.

i would call the cops.

Yup, call them and tell them about my observations. It is the right thing to do. Let them sort it out

Been there done that, but I wisely immediately grabbed the phone, called the cops with the direction the burglar ran on which street, and ran to the home of the person whose van was being burgled, who proceeded to run after the culprit to keep police informed as to his direction and rough whereabouts. Fortunately I did, the cops retrieved weeks and weeks worth of stolen property from recent car burglaries in the areas.

I get why some wouldn't confront, I have no qualms with that, but to wait for so long that you come to a stupid forum to discuss "what should I do?" I un-****-ing believable.

Well my thinking was that the guy was pretty much gone. Bicycle and all that. I doubt the cops would have gotten in the area even remotely in time to get a description.

In my case? White guy between 5'8 and 6'2, skinny, on an unknown color bicycle, in a cheap camo jacket and jeans, no facial features I could distinguish lol. I doubt it would help. Just another whiskey mike.

Yup and just another of many property crimes.

I would be worried if I were you about your own place being next.

In my own neighborhood, my place was next after 2 before it and then there were 3 more hit after us for a total of 6 burglaries in our complex. The condo complex on the next block then got hit next.

Fortunately my valuables were locked up in my tall gun safe when it happened to me.

But I left my frat ring out and my archery bow would not fit inside it, so those two items got stolen.

You gotta recognize the guy was gone even if I made the phone call. And maintenance checked it this morning and they were missing a few screwdrivers and an air filter. Big score right there.

I don't feel like shooting some asshole over that stuff. And I'm sure as **** not gonna be the next Zimmerman. Why the **** WOULD you confront him? I want to be a cop, but I'm not a cop yet. It ain't my job to arrest him. AND AGAIN...I was packing like I always am. And I have no desire to kill anyone unless it is necessary.

As far as calling the police? I mentioned it above. The guy was gone. I didn't witness the break in. I

You're going to get a lot of grief for not calling. But then you put yourself out there.

The bicycle and the day pack are the most popular burglary facilitation devices these days.

The hoodie jacket as well.

i admit i looked up the slang because it sounds like a great band name. in this case, is it "white male?" the search yielded some seedier definitions.

ditto that

Yep. I don't mind the grief. I do know that being realistic and not naive...that there is no chance in hell they would have caught the guy. And management is aware now anyway.

Lol. Yes. White male. Bravo Foxtrot, black female. The cops say that all the time. I'm surprised you'd never heard it. It may just be more common here. They even refer to people like that in regular conversation. It is kinda funny.

Don't get it. Why not call the cops?

Why waste their time? They weren't gonna find him. K-9 unit couldn't have tracked him cause he was in the bike. And all he had to do was round a couple corners on the sidewalk and he was gone. In my area it isn't that hard to slip off. No cameras, poorly lit sidewalks.
