13 TGI Fridays cited for phony booze....

Its not just those 13.This is one of the reasons I think it could be a liquor distributor problem and not necessarily a owner problem.Franchise restaurants are usually owned by a single individual. Those individual owners buy their supplies and food from the company or stores approved by the company because most chains want their product to taste the same regardless if you eat at a restaurant in New Jersey, California or Oklahoma or even China or Korea.

I understand where you're coming from, but if a distributor were pre-bottling crap in the place of high end booze, they'd be really, really ****ed. Maybe it's something in between? Not local management but regional management?

I suppose if they don't drink all the time or were really trashed its possible that they wouldn't know they were being served crap, especially mixed drinks. As far as straight drinks are concerned you should be able to tell the difference between Jack Daniels and Wild Turkey, unless you were trashed, or don't drink much.

I totally agree with all of that, but how the **** could anyone not realize that the scotch they've ordered is actually rubbing alcohol? If I'm drunk, I probably wouldn't notice that I'm drinking rotgut as opposed to (for instance) a single malt scotch. But rubbing alcohol?

Maybe its watered down. But perhaps it is the fact rubbing alcohol being used in place of scotch is how those restaurants were reported.Unless someone drinks a lot or is a connoisseur of alcoholic beverages I really couldn't picture someone knowing if the bloody mary they are drinking contains Skyy vodka instead of Popov Vodka.

Oh, dude, I completely agree with you about that. Most people have no idea. And even people who know what they're talking about re: liquor can't generally make reasonable judgments if whatever they're drinking is mixed with fruit juice or soda or (especially) bloody mary mix, or what have you. The rubbing alcohol used as scotch thing is what is most baffling to me about this.

Somebody's gonna be in some big trouble I think. Rubbing alcohol is poison! I'll bet it can do mad liver damage too, and probably kill you if you drank enough of it.

Just thinking about it turns my stomach.

I eat anywhere and like pretty much, I am not picky at ll. I love Applebees and just about everywhere. But I just dont like TGIFridays. I have never found anything there I really like.

Shockingly, we don't have any that I know of here in Charleston. I've never really understood why.

I have daymares of being in Charleston and being put into a coma by how slow the people talk................just saying...................

I saw this earlier today and I was likewise kind of amazed. I think I could accept the possibility that it's an employee theft issue if it happened at one restaurant, but 13? That's management trying to cut some corners. I'm amazed the customers never noticed they were being served crap.
I would want to know if it was one franchise owner that owned the 13, or if this is a common thing...

I suspect that and maybe the cheaper liquor served straight as the more expensive liquor is what got them the complaints.

It wasn't just the TGI Fridays, it was also 16 other bars and restaurants.

Between rubbing alcohol and whiskey? I doubt it. I agree that bar customers can be stupid, especially if they've been drinking for a while, but I can't really see not recognizing that rubbing alcohol isn't whiskey.

Don't get me wrong, I've seen this sort of thing in action. I used to bartend in fine dining restaurants before I went to law school, and I found in general that customers would taste what I told them to taste (especially with wine). But confusing rubbing alcohol with whiskey is a little beyond the pale.

I'm not all that sophisticated when it comes to hard alcohol. I love tequila and margaritas but always decline the finer (read: more expensive) brands due to my inability to really know the difference. But, I'd like to think I'd at least know the difference between rubbing alcohol and real booze.

IMO, drinks like marguaritas et al mask the quality of the alcohol. If it's cheap, though, headaches abound. The only liquor I call is Southern Comfort (unique taste) and Absolut Peppar (when I'm having a Bloody Mary). If they don't have Absolut Peppar (another unique taste), I just order the bar brand.

Ya know, I'm approaching 50 and I've never had a Bloody Mary. I need to fix that sometime.

Really?? Ask for it with green olives, if you like them. They're all rather different because they use different Bloody Mary mixes; but tomato-y and spicy pretty much a given. I enjoy them with a short beer chaser. ;) (It's a Wisconsin thing.)

I used to like Fridays until they decided they were upscale and changed the menu...

I hope they are also charged with health code violations for serving people rubbing alcohol.

It's New Jersey. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the mob is involved.

This is what I was thinking, and what Jamesrage was apparently thinking as well. With 29 locations 13 of which are TGIF, it seems unlikely to be a conspiracy by the owners and more about the supply chain.

Tim-

Yes if the supplier is a common one. I'm sure they are looking into that, unless the owners admitted wrongdoing.
