Lol there is no more Democracy in Venezuela, at least not a liberal Democracy anyways, they are now under the power of an authoritarian autocratic police state.

Well Chavez rewrote their Constitution, he packed the Supreme Court in violation of even the new Constitution, the Maisanta Program and the Tascon Lists did away with the secret ballet, he now has a million man peoples army, he now rules by decree, he has attempted to extend his term limits indefinitely, he has severely curbed freedom of speech and the press through the expansion of the desacato laws and by seizing privately owned media outlets critical of his regime, and most recently he attempted to force Venezuelan citizens to spy on one another under punishment of jail time for failure to comply.

He's not so much a threat to the U.S. as he is a threat to the liberty of the Venezuelan people.
