The mayor of a city south of Mexico’s capital was shot to death less than a day after taking office, officials said.Gunmen opened fire on Mayor Gisela Mota on Saturday at her house in the city of Temixco, said the government of Morelos state, where Temixco is located.
Two presumed assailants were killed and three others, including a minor, were detained following a pursuit, said Morelos security commissioner Jesus Alberto Capella. He said the suspects fired on federal police and soldiers from a vehicle.

On his Twitter account, Morelos Governor Graco Ramirez attributedMota’s killing to organised crime, without citing a particular drug cartel or gang.
Cartels seeking to control communities and towns have often targeted local officials and mayors in Mexico.
Mota’s leftist Democratic Revolution Party released a statement describing her as “a strong and brave woman who on taking office as mayor, declared that her fight against crime would be frontal and direct.”

Terrible though it is, this is what happens in Mexico. She is not the first, and she won't be the last.

Oh good grief, put away the knee jerk impulse to believe this is about noble leftists being targeted for their brave political stands. That's no more true than it would be say that they're targeting federal police for political reason. It's simply about crime and intimidation and, not to make this particular instance about guns but the fact is that since the citizenry of Mexico is legally disarmed, the cartels are in complete control and they're going to make an example of anyone who makes claims to the contrary.

Funny, claim I have a knee jerk reaction but you are quick to make it all about them gunsssssss

But he didn't. He said it was about crime and intimidation, which it is. If you choose to serve as a mayor or police chief in Mexico, you are a target for assassination by the cartels. This is a fact. And, sadly, a commonplace.

I had failed to thank you for beginning this thread; I had hoped somebody would. Americans (and others) need to understand that this execution is a commonplace...and is why border states remain concerned. The violence does spill over into those states.

Not at all, I can see why you'd think that, but I did specify that was not a consideration in this instance. Generally though, it is a factor in why the cartels operate completely unconcerned about consequences.

Incidentally, what did your comment about "the school of Americas lives on" mean?

he is trying to insinuate US military or those trained by the US Military were responsible.

the School of the Americas refers to military training our (often Special forces) government gave military operatives from friendly nations in Central and South America

when I hunted in Columbia (doves) a boy that used to pick up the doves and then take them to his family as partial payment joined the columbian military at 18. I met him again a few years later-he was part of the team that got Escobar. By then he was a Captain in the army and his English had gone from very rough to fluent-he noted he had been trained by US soldiers from our Special forces. it was part of this

I live in a border city and it is a very common discussion here. I've seen first hand (well, on video at a day long seminar) what the cartels are capable of. I've never seen so many severed heads and limbs and dismembered torsos in my life. They are every bit as brutal as ISIS, and that is no exaggeration.

The implication is that we're training drug cartel thugs?

Oh, the decapitated heads on display. Another commonplace intended to terrify anybody who dare to defy the cartels.

And seriously, they'll show up anywhere. One particularly graphic scene I recall was about a dozen headless bodies being strung upside down and their heads placed in a neat row all along the wall. Incidentally, the seminar I went to was largely about this very strange religion they incorporate in their criminal activities. It's all really dark but also very, very fascinating.

Oh, among the most graphic photos I've seen were the ones in a town square with some of the victims still seated in their lawn chairs.

death squads to fight marxists in central and south america, who happened to sell drugs for an easy source of funds, yes

Are you talking about Santa Muerte?
