Perhaps this could have fit under the conspiracy theory forum, but this is more of a hypothetical question, rather than a theory of why. And the question that I will ask at the end of this OP should be addressed from an international point of view.
I've been reading the threads on the new dicision on the 2nd Amendment by SCOTUS, and I keep reading about a "well regulated militia." That in order to maintain this militia, Americans need access to guns. I'm not going to address the interpretation of the phrase, as that has been done numerous times in numerous threads already. Instead let's ask a more fundamental question:
Can a well regulated militia, stand up to the worlds most powerful military? Especially within thier own borders, and have access and control of thier roads and other modes of transportation.
The whole purpose of the militia is to make sure that our states have thier soverignty, but I find this quite impossible to enforce, if the need arises.
Civilians are not allowed to have fighter jets and tanks. If the federal army wanted to isolate a militia, they could do it in a second by cutting off all the roads and close the airspace with thier jets and tanks. How can a milita fight against this?
The fact is this: The US army can suppress a revolt within thier own borders with relative ease given our military superiority.
Now...HYPOTHETICALLY, if the US becomes all Nazi-like and begins to militarize itself domestically, who will come to our aid? What foreign country will bring freedom to us? Which foreign country would benefit from helping us? What would be the motivation (monetary/political)?
Who do you think may come to our aid?

However, can I assume that there are more military bases within the border than outside the border? I don't know if this is true or not, just assuming.
Also, no matter how well armed our militias, they will not be as well armed as our military.
If it came to oppressing the people, I really don't see how we can stop it with our militias. The militia would simply be outmatched. |

Current Mood: | Re: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? The U.S. militias haven't been able to stop the federal military since WW2. However, the U.S. military would probably never be willing to engage in the horrible fighting needed to suppress the populace. I don't see the entire military all deciding to unite against the general populace. If the U.S. becomes a totalitarian state, it will be with the consent of the populace. I'd be more worried about becoming evil through the public than by the military. Our soldiers have shown exemplary dedication in Iraq, even when they are facing a hostile populace with extremely confining ROE. Meanwhile, our elected government has stripped civil liberties and engaged in torture. We have the power to decide our government, and it is up to us to prevent it from turning to evil ends.

Now...HYPOTHETICALLY............ | Maybe more appropriate to ask "if the superiority of the military now outweighs the original intent of the right to bear arms (to allow the militia to protect themselves against the Government) - should the constitutional right to bear arms be withdrawn or modified?" - withdrawn (because the militia cannot hope to meet the obligation originally placed on it
- modified (i.e. ALL the populace required to bear arms as in the Switzerland example?)
As for the Govt becoming more totalitarian - it could be argued that has already happened. |
