In the news, the US Embassy in Khartoum condemned the attack by rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) on civilians in South Kordofan last month.

The Embassys statement said that they noted with grave concern reports that on June 25 the SPLM-N attacked civilians in gold mining areas near the town of Talodi, in South Kordofan state.

The attacks killed dozens of people and injured roughly 100 others as they gathered for morning prayers to begin their day of Ramadan fasting, the statement reads.

The embassy called on the SPLM-N, all other armed groups, and the Sudanese government to cease hostilities, to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, in particular with regard to the protection of civilians, and to ensure safe, timely, and unhindered access for aid organisations.

The statement further urged the government and the SPLM-N to negotiate a peaceful settlement, stressing that there is no military solution of the conflicts in Sudan.

The US Embassy statement represents a positive development in the US dealing with peace and war issues in Sudan, as in this time the Embassy condemned the attack on civilians who were praying in Talodi. It is true that the US Embassy didn’t condemn the SPLM-N itself but it condemned its crime in killing civilians during their praying.

However, the statement of the US Embassy, and despite its involving the government by calling it to stop the war, is a step forward, considering that the US reaction in similar incidents is to condemn the Sudanese government only.

It is a good step from the US to feel that the peace in Sudan requires joint efforts from the government as well as the rebels and armed movements.

This step makes the US Administration a facilitator and just mediator between the parties to the conflict.

Let us hope that this step becomes the kick-off of new approach for more steps towards balanced and transparent relations between Sudan and the US Administration.

The upcoming talks between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the US officials might also push forward the relations and make the US Administrations looks to Sudan as a whole and not only to the empty part of the cup.

The Sudanese government wants peace and peace requires just and balanced stances from the international community in general.Sudan Views-News
