UNAMID said today that it did not find any evidence of mass rape in Tabit village, 49 km southwest of El Fashir, the capital of north Darfur.
Officials tasked by UNAMID to investigate the incident told a joint press conference with the acting governor in El Fashir that they visited the area and found no evidence of rape or the involvement of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in any violations.
Head of the investigative mission said they sent a report to the UN headquarters in New York denying the occurrence of the incident and that the report will be discussed on Monday.
"We have learned of the incident from Radio Dabanga and when we visited the area there was no evidence of such violations," he said.
A delegation also arrived from Tabit representing the residents to deny the claims of rape against their women.
Tens of women protesters in Tabit took to streets to protest the claims of rape against them.
False reports claimed that 200 women including minors were raped in a remote village in the area by a SAF battalion.
The acting governor asked the head of the mission to correct the information through all media outlets including the internet.
SAF spokesperson Col. Al Sawarmi Khalid categorically denied the incident in Tabit. He said it is a small village and the members of the garrison do not exceed 100 personnel and mass rape is an act against religion and the Sudanese custom.
