Seriously WTF!!!!!!!!

Just 3 days after the tragedy in eastern Ukraine Malaysian Airlines flight MH4, an airbus A380 heading from Kuala Lumpor to London flies over the conflicts zones of Syria, including the viciously fought over city of Homs.

How could they be soo damn stupid?!

Malaysia Airlines flog über Syrien statt über die Ukraine - SPIEGEL ONLINE

New slogan.

" Im leaving on a jet plane, dont know if i'll be back again"

They aren't the only ones. It is an air corridor. Unless the airspace is strictly forbidden, airlines will fly over it. I'm looking at the area now and there are 2 airliners over Syria.

Statistically it is probably still safer than I-5.

They are just gonna say if the local civil air authorities thought there was significant risk they would have closed the airspace. It will be their defence in the Ukrainian crash.
To a certain extent it makes sense. No airline can do in depth verification of the airspace they fly through for all safety factors. They leave that kind of thing to the authorities. min altitudes, approach paths and descent profiles are made by the civil authorities as well as closing of airspace. Airlines just operate based on those restrictions and base their flight paths on the most cost effective route to get from point A to point B.
Not saying Malaysian Airlines aren't gonna get reamed but they aren't going to be the only ones.

Regional or global flights? Global airliners seem to be avoiding the airspace like its made of lava.

Depends on the airline. And time of day. And what is in the NOTAM.

From what I have read, global flights have not been crossing Syrian airspace for over a year. Perhaps there is an occasional exception, but it is not remotely common to say the least. Shootdown risk is not the only concern when flying over a conflict zone. Given Malaysia has lost two airliners this year, including one over a conflict zone, you would think they would be taking above-average precautions to avoid future incidents.

Ever hear of "adrenaline tourism?" Flying this airliner is an adventure in and of itself.

New slogan? "I flew Malaysia and survived."
