What Hoplite is saying is that we shouldn't just reserve legal immigration for the "elite" of the world.
When we think "illegal immigration," we think people who, otherwise, would get a work visa, right?
Well, a work visa in the US requires a bachelor's degree in a high demand area, AND it requires a formal job offer form an employer who is willing to sponsor you!
Why don't you:
1. Streamline the immigration system, per the problems pointed out in this thread's namesake article, and
2. Give a visa for independent contrators who have little to no start-up money.
And, then see how many Hispanics will try and respect the immigration system.
When the number of illegal immigrations drops from 11 million to about 100,000, you will have no choice but to say that the immigration system is the problem, not the immigrants.
The United States has accepted countless immigrants from worn torn countries and other hot spots and they are not all elites. Accepting mainly immigrants who have some job skills and a chance to integrate into society is just smart policy. Accepting immigrants who really want to be to become citizens and not just take advantage of opportunities is also a good policy. When the number of immigrants drop from 11 million to 100,000 I will say good going folks. It won't make up for the severe lack of enforcement of immigration laws over many years but it would be a start.
