It's somewhat shocking to hear one who was close to GW Bush speak of Bush's failure on immigration reform so openly as Ms Rice is.

Condoleezza Rice said Friday that one of her deepest regrets from her time as secretary of state was the failure of the Bush administration to achieve real reform of immigration laws.

"We need immigration reform. I don't care if it's for the person who crawls across the desert to earn $5 an hour, or for Sergey Brin, who came here from Russia and founded Google," she said at an economic summit at Stanford University. "As a country, we can't have people living in the shadows. It's just wrong. It's not only ineffective, it's wrong."

so what is the "excuse de jour" for Bush to do nothing about immigration reform?

The reason why the McCain/Kennedy/Bush immigration reform failed was because voters were not going to be stupid and fall for the same thing twice.Voters didn't want another amnesty in exchange for hollow promises of enforcement.

The reason that amnesty has failed so far is that the voters have let the whores in Washington know in no uncertain terms that the voters are against amnesty. As it was, amnesty has almost passed several times. Obama has promised La Racist that he will be pushing amnesty soon. So we can expect the amnesty peddlers to start coming out pretty quick.

This is a fair question and I'll take a small stab at it with an opinion. Bush, or the Pentagon that I know of, has not admitted this publicly, what I am about to suggest. It seems to be lingering in the back of my mind that many immigrants who have come to the US have joined our US armed forces which has helped branches of our military to reach their quotas of recruits. I believe there's a law in place that allows an alien in our armed forces to become a US citizen after 6 months or a year, I'm not sure. I'm also not sure how this effects the status of their spouse if married and also an alien. This might be one strong reason why immigration reform has been dragging it's feet into this 21st century. Military needing anxious recruits.

Here is my thing, Why do they call them illegals? They treat them as legal. Why would they be encouraged to become legal? Our systems are so messed up!!!!! Our country cannot support our lazy people and illegals. That fact and the fact that many of our jobs have been outsourced are the real reason this country will not be able to recover. Those in Washington are so far removed that they can't see it.

Highly doubt that. Anyone with a green card can enlist and has had that option since WWII and before. More often than not their service sped up the citizenship process. No guarantees but definitely a help. However, until around 2004 there were not problems reaching recruitment quotas nor were there heavy dropout rates (those occurred during the 1st and 2nd years which eliminated alot of the chaff).

The reason immigration reform keeps failing from lack of public support is that the public is tired of the same dog and pony show with promises of enforcement in exchange for amnesty. However, the enforcement seems to continually dry up while the amnesty and flow of illegals doesn't. So when guys like Sheriff Arpaio start pushing heavy enforcement polices people quickly ignore the shady stuff because he gets results. Spectacular results and on a small budget.

Obama can try and push amnesty as much as he wants. It will cost him and his party some huge political capital especially in this economy.

I'm just gonna say it flat out. Illegal immigrants are bad, but highly overrated. It's not like the big white man was going to be a freakin' janitor anyway. They take the jobs that no one want to do, like the example above, a janitor. I still think, though, that they should be forced to enter this country the legal way, just like my ancestors did. And, I think that we should abolish the thing that says "anyone born on American soil is automatically a citizen." and rewrite it to "anyone whose parents are citizens is automatically a citizen."

I was a janitor.Lots of Americans do janitorial work. Not every company out there hires illegals.

I somewhat agree with that.I think birth right citizenship should be granted only if one of the parents is an American citizen. However the person that is claiming to be the father should submit to a DNA test in person if the mother is not an American citizen. Because last time I checked a mother can slap any man's name on a birth certificate without any proof that man is the father. However the father should be active in the child's life.Fathers of turkey baster/test tube babies shouldn't count.

I never said Americans don't do janitorial work. I was just using that as the stereotypical example. I think that the point that I was trying to get to came out funny. I was trying to say that Immigrants are willing to take low- paying, dirty jobs that many people wouldn't do. Often, though, they come here not knowing a word of English, and I know this is sort of against the constitution, but they really need to learn English to come here because it is the most common language between Americans. It would also empower them and it would make them look good in the eyes of their employer.

Those joining our military have had that option for decades. Filipinos have been doing it for a long time. It makes them LEGAL immigrants.....

The thing that bugs me about immigrants is when they come to this country, and don't know a word of English, and they expect US to understand their language!! WTF is up with that??!?

They don't expect us to...they just don't try to learn the language, especially those who are just here long enough to make enough to live well back home in Mexico. Many of them do not intend to stay any longer than is necessary.
When I lived in AZ, I saw plenty of cases where their children act as interpreters. They have been here long enough for their children to learn english in our public schools, but make no effort to learn it themselves...
Your tax dollars were used, of course....

Please dont under estimate the American worker. When times are tough and food needs to be put on the table Americans have proved their willingness to get their hands dirty many times over. Before all this immigration from Mexico got such a strong hold on us who do you think did all the manual labor? Americans did ! and they still do. The trouble is these jobs are becomming less and less available to the American workers BECAUSE of immigration. There are plenty of kids just out of high school who look for work but cant find it because those jobs have been taken by people who cant even speak english.Nobody can tell me these people are only taking the jobs that Americans dont want, nobody! Not every American is college educated and sits behind a desk pushing pencils all day long. There are many who need the less skilled labor jobs but these jobs are all vanishing and putting Americans on the unemployment lists while many people who dont even belong here have jobs. Enough is enough ! close the damn borders already !

If I was living in Mexico, the first thing I'd do is come to the US and find work. Fundamentally, that isn't wrong at all. So far I've seen many different people voice many different opinions on how they deal with it and I can rest assured that most of you would do the same thing if the shoe was on the other foot. Yet that fact is never mentioned.

Mexico cannot sustain its population and nothing short of putting our troops on their streets will stop the flow of immigrants coming into the US from that country.

I'm not suggesting that measure, I'm merely pointing out there is little that can be done. Even through legal means, their country still cannot sustain their population and the US cannot either.

What really needs reforming is the process of becoming a legal resident/citizen. The way it works now, it is much easier for a non-skilled person to come over here illegally than it is for someone with an advanced degree to obtain a work visa and come and contribute to the economy. It's exactly the opposite of how it should really be.

Here is a related thought....where will Americans go when there is 20% unemployment in the USA?
I suggest the border states, and they should have marches on state capitols demanding that illegals be deported so Americans can have jobs.

Last year in Phoenix I order a hamburger with mustard and tomatos only, and got buns, tomato, and mustard, no meat. The server spoke almost no english.
Surely there isn't a shortage of english speaking people willing to work at Wendy's?

They need to start regulating how many children these people can have especially the ones depending on welfare and food stamps. I dont mind helping out Americans down on their luck but I will be damned if I want to be forced to pay higher taxes just because Mr. And Mrs. Illegal want to keep on popping out a baby year after year and expect me to pay for it ! No ,Mexico can't sustain its population and neither can we. It shouldnt be our problem in the first place. China put a cap on how many children their people could have because it was getting out of hand and their country was suffering from the consequences and now we are seeing the same thing happen here . Enough is enough already and if people cant be a viable contribution to our country instead of tax burden then dont allow them in ! National gaurd at the border is an excellent idea ! Id rather help pay for that until they finally get the idea.

Yes, break the chain....block all new illegals and start deporting those already here. When the jobs go unfilled, employers will have to start hiring actual citizens of the USA...
as for capping number of children, the catholic church is a major influence in Central and South America, so don't expect the birthrate to decline there.

It cracks me up to hear conservatives advocate for abortion and eugenics.

The Illegals that crowd our prisons, push dope on our streets, and rape our women and children by far out number those who choose to serve in our military. I do not believe that the need for recruits should out weigh the need to keep our country safe from people eho don't belong here who commit crimes. Thats just my opinion.

at the least, they should consider themselves guest workers, and guests can be shown the door when they prove themselves to be inconsiderate. That goes for any felony, or more than a few misdemeanor traffic tickets.
Once deported for such reasons, legal or otherwise, they don't get to come back, ever.
