Why would the US government want to stop this inflow?

The USA has never been just an English speaking country. Since day one, there have been hundreds of languages, and if you take out Natives, there were still languages from dozens of immigrant groups that started out and have maintained their unique culture and language indefinitely. They never learned English because they didn't have to. Many were treated like slaves, and after a generation or two, they assimilated just nicely anyway. It was the racist white people and the continued racism of white people that has led to this "America is an English speaking country" idea. BTW, I am not calling you racist, it is just a notion of racism that has permeated the mainstream ideologue since nobody seems to bother to find out why other people don't speak English.

Parts of this country and it's natives were speaking Spanish loooong before the English even arrived. The Russians were on the West Coast too. The French were all over the heartland of America as well.

To try and go back in order to rewrite history or to have some false hope that everybody in America should be speaking English is not realistic or honest.

Just adding a bit of info to this. All one needs to do to notice how multi-lingual this country has been over it's history, all one has to do is go down to Louisiana. Baton Rouge? New Orleans? Terrebone(Good land) Parish? Boeuf River? Or California. San Antonio? San Miguel? What about Florida? San Agustin? Cayo Hueso(Key West)?

This issue has little to do with making English the official language. Its pointless xenophobia. I'm in favor of mandating English as the official language of the U.S. as far as official or government communication goes. Requiring that all U.S. citizens can communicate is simply a practical requirement to improve our society. However, there is nothing wrong if Americans want to speak another language. Reciting the pledge of allegiance can be done in any language that the speaker feels like. You have the option to not recite the pledge at all if you wish.

Third most populous country in the world. And yes, I've been out west. In fact, I live in the west. You probably don't live in the west or you would know there's no water out here, smart guy. So yes the country is at its carrying capacity. Let the hordes of aliens live in their own countries, is the right answer. Why would the government not want to stop the inflow of aliens? Because business wants cheap labor and government wants new tax payers. Neither are goals of mine.

I think it's great for kids to learn another language and for other kids to keep their heritage by learning and speaking their parent's language.

My maternal grandmother is Polish and didn't teach her kids to speak Polish because of the same type of bull**** Mexicans go through now. She regrets it now because her language is a part of her and her own children can't even speak to her in her own country's tongue.

My kids are going to speak Spanish and English and I would love it if they learned even more languages. It's almost sad how small minded some people are here in such a global world. Are these people not aware most people in the world are bi- or even multi-lingual?
