Parmi les 1.631 Juifs qui étaient à bord du train, 231 parviendront à s’échapper. Malheureusement, 95 évadés seront repris quelques semaines plus tard avant de périr dans les camps.
Au sein du Groupe G des résistants de l’ULB, Robert Maistriau était chargé de la Direction nationale du Recrutement et de l’Organisation.
Arrêté le 21 mars 1944 à Bruxelles, il connaîtra l’enfer de Breendonk, de Buchenwald, onze longs mois à Ellrich et Harzungen, des camps annexes de Dora et, enfin, Bergen Belsen, d’où il sera libéré le 15 avril 1945. Il ne pesait alors que 39 kilos.
Après la guerre, il a notamment constitué une forêt au Congo avec des semences du monde entier.
Né le 13 mars 1921 à Ixelles, Robert Maistriau était le dernier survivant du trio qui avait attaqué le XXe convoi.
Une cérémonie d’adieu aura lieu le mercredi 1er octobre prochain, à 11h30, en l’église de Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, située place Saint-Lambert à 1200 Bruxelles.

Groupe G, who freed several dozens of Jews in April 1943, has died in the night of thursday to friday at his home in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. He was 87 y/o.
This former student from the ULB became famous when he attacked the Convoy XX, in the night of the 19th April 1943, while he was only 22 y/o.
Armed with a single pistol and 7 bullets, he and two of his friends have succeeded in saving several dozens of Jews who were in an Auschwitz bound train.
Among the 1.631 Jews who were on board, 231 have escaped. Unfortunately, 95 of them have been captured in the following weeks and have perished in the concentration camps.
In the Groupe G, Robert Maistriau's job was to recruit students and organize attacks.
Arrested on 21st March 1944 in Brussels, he has been sent to Breendonk, Buchenwald, Ellrich and Harzungen (near Dora), and finally Bergen Belsen, where he has been freed in april 1945. At that time he weighed only 39kg.
