Folklore

From the Guldenspooraanslag (1302) to the Ommegang (XVth century), the Brabantian Revolution (1790) or the Empire period (1792-1815), there are lots of things to commemorate in Belgium. A great diversity of uniforms!

They are commemorating one of our revolutions, the Brabantians one.
(at that time, we were called "united states of Belgium" lol!)

This one is incredible:

Délirant Final du Concert FIMM le Mardi Soir de la Ducasse de Mons 2005 avant le Grand Feu d'Artifice

(clic on the picture)

Every year, after the Ducasse de Mons (see post above), there is the "international festival of military music", with military bands from Germany, USA, France, Denmark, Poland, Italia...

At the end of the concert, they play the "Doudou"...but after one minute, the conductor of the Belgian Air Force Band hugs a US Soldier, then everybody shakes hands and hugs!!!

That's a nice symbol of what music does.

Last sunday I met a guy who is in these marchs, he says that unfortunately it costs a lot of money to restore the old uniforms they wear, and that it will be more and more rare in the future, as subsidies for folklore are diminishing.

We are going to Italy in July to play music. A company of marcheurs (guys like the ones in the videos, dressed with Napoleonic uniforms) was going with us but they can't go abroad with their guns!

Hey how do you know that?!

It's simple:

- Zaventem is near Brussels, in Flander, and not far from Wallonia
- People in Belgium like to complain about everything
- Zaventem Airport has got 2 runways: a short one and a long one.

Once you take these three factors into account, you have got the answer

- Zaventem is in the middle of a densely populated aera. Planes taking off make a lot of noise. Many people complain about it
- Flemish people try to make planes take off towards the south (Wallonia) while people from Brussels and Walloons want them to take off towards Flanders (so that Flemish people get all the noise)
- We've reached an agreement: planes take off towards the north (and thus fly over Flemish people) on certain days, and take off towards the south on other days

The problem is that they have not foreseen that the runway used to take off towards the north is twice shorter than the other runway, and that Jumbo Jets need the long runway

So the crew took the "legal" runway, which was too short to take off, and crashed onto the ground

Quote:
"Since 2004, freight planes have been using this runway on Saturdays and Sundays, yet it is 1,000 metres (yards) shorter than the others," he added.

"The politicians can no longer beat about the bush, this runway must immediately be closed to the heaviest carriers," said the Mayor of neighbouring Wezembeek-Oppem, Francois Van Hoobrouck.
(but at least, Walloons have not been disturbed by the noise of this plane, and that's the most important thing)
