Through school I got the drive-by version of it, but I can't say I actually know all the specifics. What exactly happened? What was the timeline?

For those who were on earth then, what were your thoughts during that time?

Ah, I think you're asking too much and that filling in the historical gaps to your own independent satisfaction is what you need to do.

But I was in college then, and I don't think people who weren't around then can really imagine the shock and disgrace. There's so much shock and disgrace these days that these are commonplaces. I mean, Anthony Weiner is making a run for NYC mayor. Mark Stanford is back in office. OMG.

But the thing for me was that the President lied. At least Nixon had the dignity to resign. Fast-forwarding, President Clinton looked me straight in the eye and lied to me...and he did NOT have the dignity to resign. And hardly anybody seemed to care, so the times, they have a'changed.

And yet nothing is new under the sun. Here we are tonight in May of 2013 and with a President whom even WaPo has now called a four-Pinocchio liar, and an "enemies list" and corruption in the IRS.

So to call forth part of a song from Nixonian times, "Clowns to the left of me/Jokers to the right/Here I am, stuck in the middle with you."

I wrote a quick ditty that you can teach your class to sing; a musical summation of Watergate.

When Nixon was the President
He called and talked to me
Said, I want you to come to Washington
And plan a burglary
I said, "Dick, hell no
I can't go, it's not my cup of tea
Then Nixon fell
and Liddy went to jail
But they ain't no flies on me

Ain't no flies on me, boys
Ain't no flies on me
There might be one or two on you
But they ain't no flies on me

You left out Hunt and Erlichman and Dean and so many, so here's primer for those who weren't born then. Might be useful as we're living through the scandals de jour: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_scandal

Have a heart, darlin'. I wrote that in about 3 minutes. No songs for you!

I could rhyme Hunt easy enough. While it might have been vulgar, it would have been appropriate. Dean, yes, and he'd be fun to do something with in my song. Erlichman would be fun to try to see if you could rhyme it and without losing the measure. Haldeman would be a bit easier. Rhyming Kleindienst would be as easy as rhyming orange.

Isn't there a Country Joe song kind of like that?....

Hell, I don't know. Now I have to go look. Let me know if you find something. If there is something I'm retro suing his ass!

I did look:lamo

I'm pretty sure it came out well before Watergate but anyway -

A quick search turned up a kids song, "Ain't No Flies On Us" and curiously "Ain't No Flies on Me" by the Grateful Dead and "Ain't No Flies On Jesus", which I think used to be sung by the Disciples about 2000 years ago, but nothing about of even close to a Watergate rendition.

Wow! I can't remember every having heard that, but I really like it. Feckin Country Joe! Outstanding!

How about ;
... Don't change Dicks in the middle of a screw...
...Vote for Nixon in seventy two...
The saddest part about Watergate was that it was entirely unnecessary. Nixon was polling high and had his re-election pretty well sewn up.
But Nixon was a bit paranoid. He was afraid that there would be some kind of fall surprise by the Democrats so he organized the Plumbers break in to assure that he would know what the Dems were up to. The most incriminating part was that he tried to cover it up.
When Congress and the American people found out what he was up to he was finished.
Had he not resigned he would have gone to prison.
But sadder still is that Watergate was not the worst thing Nixon did... not by a long long shot. Here is a little lesson about the kind of political opportunist Nixon was, that I posted in another thread.
Nixon purposely sabotaged the 1968 peace agreement that was negotiated by LBJ's administration, by secretly going to the North Vietnamese and telling them he could give them a better peace agreement if they waited until after the election in the fall on 1968. The war continued, and because of that Humphrey lost to Nixon. The agreement broke down under the new administration and the war raged on for at least FIVE MORE YEARS.
NIXON, BECAUSE OF HIS SELFISH POLITICAL AMBITIONS, IS PERSONALLY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATHS OF 21,366 AMERICAN TROOPS AND UN-CALCULABLE THOUSANDS OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN DEATHS BETWEEN 1968 AND THE END OF THE WAR
Nixon is without comparison the most immoral scum sucking despot the presidency will ever see.

Where do you people come up with that crap?

There were a group of democrats doing illegal actions. The republicans resorted to illegal tactics to catch them, and got caught. That was long ago, I only remember such highlights.

Where do you people come up with that crap?
It is irrefutable historical fact.
Get your head out of the republican sand and read a little.
I suggest you start with the link I provided.
Or , of course you could deny the facts and stick with your republican ignorant historical fantasies.

Perhaps you should use an actual source for your historical information instead of a glorified op-ed.

Nixon took a secret trip to North Vietnam?...LOL!!!! If that were true, why didn't Johnson have Nixon arrested? Was it because Johnson illegally wire-tapped Nixon's campaign office, or was it because Nizon never made such a trip?

First grow up, then stop reading crap and thinking it's actual history.

My God.

I agree. Where these partisan hacks come up with this. To take hearsay, and make it as fact is showing lack of intelligence. Ever hear the term "trust but verify?"

Here is the audio: BBC Archive

The cometary says Johnson was trying to get Humphry to use the information.

Apples and oranges. Clinton was an adulterer, which is without a doubt very wrong, but it doesn't compare to ordering a felony to be committed solely for political reasons.

If I remember correctly, it wasn't so much that Democratic pranksters were doing illegal things but rather unethical things to sabotage Nixon's re-election.

I don't know for sure, though, and if you could provide examples of this it would be much appreciated.

I agree. I think Nixon is one of the most politically astute and savvy Presidents we ever had.

It's just unfortunate that his political skills led him to go down paths that are unethical and, what's more, illegal.

The source is the Johnson Library itself.
No one ever said Nixon went to Vietnam. He had his representative Anna Chennault contact the Vietnamese ambassador with his treasonous idea.
Anna Chennault contacting South Vietnam's Ambassador to the United States Bui Diem regarding the political importance for President Thieu's continued boycott of the Paris peace talks.
Johnson learned about Nixon's treason because he was illegally wire tapping the Vietnam embasy. So he couldn't go public with it. It remained LBJs secret for 45 years until the LBJ library released the tapes.
After reading these secret FBI cables, Johnson began working the phones to counter the Nixon campaign's gambit. According to recordings of the phone calls that have since been declassified, Johnson complained to Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen about the subterfuge.
On Nov. 2, just three days before the election, an angry Johnson telephoned Dirksen at 9:18 p.m., to provide details about Nixon's activities and to urge Dirksen to intervene forcefully.
"The agent [Chennault] says she's just talked to the boss in New Mexico and that he said that you [South Vietnam] must hold out, just hold on until after the election," Johnson said. "We know what Thieu is saying to them out there. We're pretty well informed at both ends." [Johnson believed "the boss in New Mexico" was Nixon's running mate, Spiro Agnew, who was there on a campaign trip.]
Johnson then injected a thinly veiled threat to go public. "I don't want to get this in the campaign," Johnson said, adding: "They oughtn't be doing this. This is treason.
