Lean: Liberal Gender: | Non-meat protein? My son is in day care at the Jewish Community Center in my area. They don't allow me to send meat for any meal/snack. I use Boca burgers, fake Chicken nuggets, and fish sticks. What are some other non-meat foods I can give to him for protein? I have given him black beans. I want to try other stuff on him, and I am just a plain dummy when it comes to knowing what has protein.
Thank you! |

They are kosher, so I think they are playing it safe by not allowing any meat. |

Lean: Independent Gender: Awards: | Re: Non-meat protein? Here are some other sources, I'm a bit surprised that they're insisting on kosher (our local one doesn't, and although our kids are being raised jewish, they eat their cheeseburgers and pizza with pepperoni all the time).
PROTEIN IN LEGUMES: Garbanzo beans, Kidney beans, Lentils, Lima beans, Navy beans, Soybeans, Split peas
PROTEIN IN GRAINS: Barley, Brown rice, Buckwheat, Millet, Oatmeal, Rye, Wheat germ, Wheat, hard red, Wild rice
VEGETABLE PROTEIN: Artichokes, Beets, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Green peas, Green pepper, Kale, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Mustard green, Onions, Potatoes, Spinach, Tomatoes, Turnip greens, Watercress, Yams, Zucchini
PROTEIN IN FRUITS: Apple, Banana, Cantaloupe, Grape, Grapefruit, Honeydew melon, Orange, Papaya, Peach, Pear, Pineapple, Strawberry, Tangerine, Watermelon
Hemp Protein PROTEIN IN NUTS AND SEEDS: Almonds, Cashews, Filberts, Hemp Seeds, Peanuts, Pumpkin seeds, Sesame seeds, Sunflower seeds, Walnuts (black)
One excellent ingredient to look for is hemp seed protein. Hemp seed is an nutritious dietary source of easily digestible gluten-free protein. It provides a well-balanced array of all the amino acids, including 34.6 grams of protein for each 100 grams. The fatty acid profile of the hemp seed is extremely beneficial, containing omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a virtually ideal ratio. Other beneficial aspects of hemp seed include a strongly favorable unsaturated-to-saturated fat ratio; a high content of antioxidants; and a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. |

Thank you! | Any kind of beans, egg, cheeses (hard cheese has more protein than soft), tofu, seeds (my kids love sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds), yoghurt, soy, quinoa, spinach, etc.
My kids love hummus so as new coup suggested you should give that a try. They can dip pita bread in it or as my daughter loves to do, dip celery in it.
My kids also love spinach salad with feta cheese.
You can even do just cheese sandwiches but make them on whole grain bread, especially one that has lots of seeds and whatnot in it. |

They are kosher, so I think they are playing it safe by not allowing any meat. | When you combine corn and lima beans, you get some good protein in your diet. Milk and eggs make good sources of proteins also. Lentils, many beans (especially red ones), and tofu mashed into risotto or rice. Also, many mushrooms like ****ake and cremini mushrooms make decent protein.
If its just for lunch that he isn't having meat, its really not THAT big a deal. He can get enough protein out of cauliflower or just his milk at lunch if he's still eating meat at dinner or breakfast
