Healthy or not?

The CRIOC, a governmental consummer organisation, has launched a website where nutritionists tell what they think about diverse products that are sold in supermarkets.

Le bien manger - Dieet Team

they analize tendencies ("diet products", products with vitamins or omega-3, "anticholesterol" products...)

Le bien manger - Que proposent les producteurs ? - Découvrir les tendances du marché

DIET FOOD are not always a good thing: it's written "diet" or "sugar-free" on it, so you don't care eat much more of these "diet" crisps, chocolate, ice cream.... Then it is sometimes written "only x% of fat", but be careful because they compensate it by adding a lot of sugar, and the "low fat" product is in fact extremely rich.

VITAMINS are not always good neither. When there are too few vitamines, their effects is negligible, and too much of it may be dangerous. Producers often add "+ vitamins" to make you buy their products, but the vitamins they add are often useless to you if you eat healthy.

ANTICHOLESTEROL PRODUCTS are vegetal sterols which have a chemical structure close to cholesterol. No scientifical experience prooves that they reduce your cholesterol or that they help against heart attacks. On the contrary, they may be dangerous for pregant women and kids, and in the long term they may provoke problems of calcification. If you want to solve your cholesterol problems, change your eatings habits instead of eating that.

then, they analisze some products: Le bien manger - Les produits alimentaires concernés - Analyser les produits et les affirmations commerciales présentes sur l'emballage

some examples:

Kellog's Special K
- not much fat, but not many fibres neither, and still too much sugar for such a "diet" product. You should eat at least a fruit with that.

Frosties
Not enough fibres (= you're still hungry after that) and far too much sugar to be an alternative to a healthy meal. Should be accompanied with a fruit.

Nesquick (cocoa)
This powder is mainly made of sugar, and should then be consummed with moderation. If you want to drink milk with chocolate, you'd rather buy pure cocoa and add yourself a small quantity of sugar.

Minute Maid orange juice.
Brings as much vitamins as real oranges, but no fibres. You'd rather eat real oranges.

Tropicana "essentials" "multivitamins" "calcium"...
False allegation, fallacy. They try to make you believe that these fruit juices are interresting to you if you want to be healthy. A normal alimentation with real fruits will bring you more vitamins, calcium and magnesium than these juices, which should be consummed with moderation as they contain a lot of sugar.

Aquarius
Water with sugar and chemical aromatisation. You'd rather drink water and eat real fruits.

Diet Fanta
a lot of water, not too many calories, but many chemical products. Rather drink water.

Tic-tac
as all the sweets, they are just concentrated sugar provoking hyperglycemy. Contains 2 calories only because they are very small.

Yakult "light"
Fermented milk with a lot of sugar. Positive effect on your intestine only if you consume it every day.

Crisps Lays
A lot of fat and a lot if salt for a useless product

Crisps Lays "light"
Less fat, but still a lot of fat and salt for a useless product. "light" is just an attempt to make you eat more of it.

Pringles mini
It is strange to advise people to eat healthy on the pack of an unhealthy product. Not many fat only because it contains very few crisps. Useless product.

(if you are interrested in a specific product, ask me and i'll translate it)

Re: Healthy or not?

Hmm... if you really want "diet" chips, toss out the Baked Lay's and buy some soy crisps instead. You might have to go to Sun Harvest or some other "health food" grocery store to find them, depending upon where you live; here, they sell them at Walgreens, but this is admittedly a very health-conscious city.
I recommend Glenny's Soy Crisps. They come in many flavors; I like the garlic flavor, and the sea salt one. Not too fond of the barbeque.
Oh, these only have 70 calories a bag, and they're super high in protein and nutrients.
In general, though, I don't like snack foods all that much.
Your other option is to buy an air popper and make plain popcorn; plenty of fiber (popcorn is a whole grain), virtually no calories. You could eat this ****e til your jaws gave out from exhaustion, and still not consume a hundred calories. In fact, I think plain popcorn might be one of those "negative calorie" foods, which take more calories to consume and digest than they actually contain.
It doesn't taste very good- like styrofoam- but you can always sprinkle it with spices or something.

Looks like those are all processed foods.

The thing is to eat foods as near to their natural state as possible. One can eat all the bananas, apples, potatoes, pecans, etc., one wants to and, barring allergies, would be as healthy as a horse-generally free of heart disease and sporting a greatly reduced chance of cancer than the average person.

People worry about the wrong things, in this country anyway. Like whether or not they're getting enough protein. If you are an American, you're getting a lot more than you need, so don't worry about it. Worry about how much fat you're taking in. Get more fiber. Stay away from processed foods. Drink more water. Walk around the block occasionally. That's all.

Well, if you're vegan or lacto-veg, it becomes more of an issue.
One can still get plenty of protein, but one has to actually consciously arrange for this protein.
I agree with you in the case of the average American omnivorous diet, however.
Protein deficiency is not likely to be an issue, whether or not one is conscious of how many grams of protein one is consuming in any given day.

If I understand lacto vegetarianism right, there's not much chance of protein defiency there.

But even with pure vegetarians, there is a variety of high protein food they would approve of. They need to eat those things every day anyway-foods like beans and nuts.
