Good news for these new parents. A baby has been conceived through a relatively new artificial insemination technique. According to the article, this is the first healthy birth using DNA from three parents.

The story about Leigh syndrome is a bit tragic, although I believe that's the reason for the donation of egg and sperm. One of the biological mothers' DNA was inserted into the egg. I wonder how many parents the boy will have in total, if only one out of the three biological parents will be responsible for his upbringing.

The National Academy of Medicine panel said these "three-parent" babies could be a way for people with a high risk of rare, devastating genetic diseases to have healthy children that are genetically their own, but said the Food and Drug Administration should carefully regulate such experiments.

And at first, the panel advised, only male embryos should be made this way until it's clear that dangerous mutations would not be passed down to future generations.

I predict the two women will share joint custody and the father will be court ordered to finacially support both housholds

Even though that financial structure would technically be legal, only one household is paid for custody. Indeed, the single custodial family is the recipient of such a support order.

Also, I addressed a scenario similar to the one you describe. If the father is responsible for multiple support orders, then the support orders will be lesser. It is in the best interest of society and especially the custodial family to stop the biological father from further reproduction, in order to gain monopoly control of his resources.

In most states the donor is protected from that IF they follow the proper channels and use medical professionals. The legal problems arise when they try to do the insemination themselves, even if artificial (such as with a turkey baster).

Why is reproductive freedom a legal dilemma between the state and its citizens? My answer is that the state will do anything in it's power to find someone else responsible, rather than endure a child becoming public ward.

I suppose J.K. Rowling would also encourage parents to adopt a two parent model, even though she was a single parent, but that's a different story. J.K. Rowling does not have the same power to coerce people to embody a certain type of family structure. She can share an inspirational story about a boy raised in a two parent household, but I digress.
