I’ve been on a halfhearted quest to get into some semblances of shape for the last year. Been blaming my lack of enthusiasm on my rotor cuff operation last year. Been BS,ing myself.
Saying that if I had full rotation of my shoulder I could do so much better, when in fact it has been laziness on my part. When I train I do mostly strength training as I hate Cardio, belong to a commercial gym, plus have a pretty good gym in my basement. Most of my strength training has been the balls to the wall type that I grew up with, couple of hours in the gym and go eat what won’t eat you.
Thats most likely what caused the torn rotor cuff. Has anybody had any experience with the slow rep,s, the 5 to 6 second per rep training? Thinking about trying that, just might get me into the grove..Might even try some …maybe five or ten minutes cardio,..Nah jus tkiddin. |

Thinking about trying that, just might get me into the grove..Might even try some …maybe five or ten minutes cardio,..Nah jus tkiddin. | The last 12-18 months have sucked for me, and up to that point, I was a serious gym rat... a balls to the wall for an hour and a half for 6 days a week...
I have broken my ankle, about tore my bicep tendon around my right shoulder(never heard of it until I got my MRI and start therapy), sprained the same ankle that I broke and pulled the holy crap out of my back...
Fortunately, I was in pretty damn good shape up to that point and hit the gym in between injuries, so I haven't lost a whole lot. But, I hate cardio with a purple passion and although still have a bit of muscle mass, I've got a ponch that I've got to get on the treadmill to get rid of... and I hate stomach ponches on me... I might be 39 and might not have a 6-pack again, but I hate ponches!!!
It'll be interesting to see how my shoulder injury holds up with weights again, starting up this week... good luck with yours!

Unlike you guys, I love cardio. I prefer doing body weight excersises(Pull ups, push ups, dips ets...) over weights. I have a treadmill, some weights, and a pull up bar in my basement. Tonight is my first workout, and I will reach my goal of getting back to my slim and trim weight of 205lbs.

I got out of that routine, but not into a whole lot of cardio. Cant stand the thread mill, but do like to hike, live in the rural area so have plenty woods and mountains to hike in. As for the six-pack abs, he, he. Lets just say have you ever seen a power lifter with a six pack other than one in each hand? |

But after reading into the amount of gym time they put in, the crazy diets, and the shredding/cutting phases I decided against it. My goal is to get back to my lean weight of 205lbs, and then I might get back into training in MMA and maybe do some amatuer fights once we move back south. |

I would like to get down too 200 hundred, I feel that is my ideal Wight, at least that is how I feel about it, the doc says it should be 190.Wighed 175 when I came out of the Marines, within a year of civilian life ballooned up to 240. That was years ago though, at my age if I stay around 200 I’ll be happy. Some of the young guys at the gym are on this slow rep kick, thought I would give it a try again, the first time it came around must have been fifteen years ago I tried it, got injured, most likely bad form was the cause, possibly using to much weight was a contributing factor. They seem to think that this is something new in Wight training; I mentioned that it has been around for at least fifteen years that I know of. They look at me like I’m some senile old fart,O well so be it I was the same at their age, anybody over forty was addled. |

Then I started lifting alot and had good gains. I was up to 205 again, but I was still pretty cut. Then I got my current desk job and my diet and excersise went to **** and at one time I had ballooned up to 252lbs. I had gotten down to 220 lbs again, but I have been yo-yo ing back and forth and haven't gotten under 220 since. My body weight now, if I was to remove all my fat(so bones, muscles, organs, water) would be around 190(just had a fit test). so 205 for me would be around 8-10% body fat. Any thing less than that I just don't have the time to train for, with my kid and work.
If I was to add muscle to my frame and keep my body fat at those levels, I think my frame could accept about 250-265lbs. But when I get old, I think it could end up being too hard on my joints later in life, so my aim is to keep it lean from now on. |

Its always a good idea to keep the Weight off the joints, I’m probably a lot older that you, and my job keeps me on the road (truck driver) it is hard to keep any kind of diet eating in truck stops. Luckily I’m in and out of the house every other day, didn’t use to be that way though, used to be gone a week at a time. That was some of my incentive to get back in shape, just looking at some of the wrecks, waddling into the truck stop restaurant, and eat biscuits and gravy, after there done they chain smoke half a pack or cigarettes while drinking a half pot of coffee , and waddle back to their truck so the can drive three hundred more miles and shovel some more grease down.
Luckily I don’t smoke, and looking that I thought man you better start doing something. Went and joined a gym, after being out of training for about ten years and got back into pretty decent shape until I had the rotator cuff surgery I mentioned. I’m not going to do much until after the New Year starts, to many parties coming up and not enough will power.
Whats wrong with this board since the upgrade ?Cant use none of the smilies, the bold/underline function don't work, or is it just on my end? |

Now that I don't haul cases of wine for a living, guess I might do a little lifting for upper body. I never did any leg work cause I always figured running would take care of that, but someone told me it could make me a much better runner. Any of you gym rats hear of that?

Any of you gym rats hear of that? | It helps but I would make it compliment your running style. Since you are looking for long distance/endurance I would focus on higher reps with lower weights(works the type two muscle fibers, which are slow twitch fibers).
Thats my advice, but I generally don't do a whole lot of leg workouts because my legs are pretty well developed muscularly from running. In fact I have had guys that were body builders ask me what I do for calf workouts, since they are well developed. To their dismay I tell them I don't work out calves at all, and only really run. I guess some guys just naturally have the chicken legs, and others don't. |
