There's been a lot of talk about what's wrong with US health care but in my mind there is one key thing that stands out above even medical bankruptcies and the commodification of health care....it's a pervasive anti-science sentiment that has infected the medical community. The canary in the coal mine is allowing an unabashed, unapologetic 7-day creationist like Ben Carson perform some of the most advanced and experimental brain surgeries in the world. Why on Earth do we let some fundamentalist experiment with the brains of Siamese twins? The prospect of creationism proliferating among doctors is even more alarming than Sarah Palin in the vice president's office.
A big part of the problem is that medical students don't get any evolution in medical school. They need to get at least half a year of it. It is the cornerstone of all Biology. You wouldn't want an engineer who has no training in Newton's Laws of electricity and magnetism so why let doctors get licensed with no knowledge of evolution? We need to require a semester of evolutionary Biology continuing ed for all physicians to remain licensed. We need to more watchful for any doctors with any anti-science sentiments so that we can get the word out and patients can avoid doctors who believe in superstitions rather than science.
And you less religious right wingers and libertarian types ought to really be putting your skills of judgementalism and harassment towards shaming these crackpot doctors. This it the kind of thing that everyone except the religious right should unite behind and fix.
