There's been a lot of talk about what's wrong with US health care but in my mind there is one key thing that stands out above even medical bankruptcies and the commodification of health care....it's a pervasive anti-science sentiment that has infected the medical community. The canary in the coal mine is allowing an unabashed, unapologetic 7-day creationist like Ben Carson perform some of the most advanced and experimental brain surgeries in the world. Why on Earth do we let some fundamentalist experiment with the brains of Siamese twins? The prospect of creationism proliferating among doctors is even more alarming than Sarah Palin in the vice president's office.

A big part of the problem is that medical students don't get any evolution in medical school. They need to get at least half a year of it. It is the cornerstone of all Biology. You wouldn't want an engineer who has no training in Newton's Laws of electricity and magnetism so why let doctors get licensed with no knowledge of evolution? We need to require a semester of evolutionary Biology continuing ed for all physicians to remain licensed. We need to more watchful for any doctors with any anti-science sentiments so that we can get the word out and patients can avoid doctors who believe in superstitions rather than science.

And you less religious right wingers and libertarian types ought to really be putting your skills of judgementalism and harassment towards shaming these crackpot doctors. This it the kind of thing that everyone except the religious right should unite behind and fix.

Sounds like your just jealous that a such gifted surgeon also happens to be religious

Funny. The ACA was championed by a creationist President.

Funny. The ACA was championed by a creationist President.

"My belief is that the story that the Bible tells about God creating this magnificent Earth on which we live -- that is essentially true, that is fundamentally true." -Barack Obama

Now watch the parade of people that will come in and explain how that isnt REALLY a belief in God and Creationism. And besides...Obama didnt really mean that, he just lies to tell people what they want to hear so he can be popular and get elected. Its for their own good, really.

To tell you the truth, I stopped reading, when you profess to want to stop excellent surgeons from saving lives because they believe things that you don't consider politically correct.

Nonsense. Medical school requires a few biology classes as an undergrad and evolution is covered in the lower level courses.

This is the problem with the term "creationism," as it allows for an umbrella encompassing both young earth and old earth, as well as just using it as a metaphor altogether if one so chooses. What's actually relevant is not creationism so much as evolution denial, and that's the playground of the moronic. Carson has made quite clear on multiple occasions that he doesn't believe in evolution, and even goes so far as to say outright that it's the creation of demonic forces as well as suggesting malicious intent on the part of people who accept it.

One thing you can bet on is that Obama never denied evolution.
