I'm torn between thinking is this disturbing or just an indication of the need mental health care by a lot of women have some questionable issues with their sanity.

To be fair I put men with inflatable girl friends in the same category.

If you buy one don't leave it in the car alone where it can be seen It could cost you a window if a cop wants to save a life.

They do look real, real don't you think.

Fake Babies, Fake Lives - FoxNews.com

The dolls, which can cost more than $12,000 (but often sell for several hundred or a few thousand dollars)—have extremely realistic hair and incredibly lifelike facial features and skin tone, thanks to many hours spent by artists who paint them, complete with one-of-a-kind birthmarks—and painstakingly apply their locks and lashes. Some of the dolls are made to look exactly like premature babies and delivered with an incubator and even with IVs.

Some younger women claim the dolls satisfy their maternal needs. Some middle-aged women claim the dolls comfort them as their children leave for college. Indeed, companies will supply custom-made dolls that closely resemble a woman’s own baby—born twenty years before.

It would be one thing if women were buying “reborn dolls” out of morbid curiosity or a passion to collect them (like Hummel figurines). But women are taking their dolls out in strollers (no kidding) and strapping them into car seats for trips to the mall. Fortunately, they don’t actually believe their “babies” are real. That would be a true psychotic delusion. But they are able to suspend disbelief and play with them as though they are real—kind of like believing in a movie while you are watching it..

creepy. they should get a cat.

I remember seeing a tv show about these women a long time ago - seriously mentally disturbed people. but at least they aren't killing anyone.

It is twisted that some head out of the house with all this child stuff in tow to get attention - but, again, weird but no extreme harm done.

maybe it's a form of therapy, perhaps cc could weigh in?

Amen. Unless they like that they really don't have to "care" for the doll. Then poor kitty.

So now the guys from Jackass can really scare people while they tip over a stroller.

ok......confession time.........i want a cat very badly, but we are taking off to sail our boat (cruise) for an very extended period, and to other countries, so having a cat is not practical for us. one of my friends gave me a stuffed cat that "breathes" and purrs. i enjoy her, but i don't walk her!

I should add I don't find the dolls disturbing or creepy - they're phenominal art. Reminds me of the intricate work that Ron Mueck does - huge fan. Amazing talent.

If someone just wanted it as a form of sculpture - no problem.

But it's the pretending that goes along with it that's disturbing - the indiviudal that take these out of the house and play mommie.

The instinct to parent in some people is extremely strong, to the point of neurotic; if you're one of those people but can't have kids, I can see why this would happen.

They're not really harming anyone by doing this.

This is incredibly weird. And yet somehow unsurprising. I know some women who are totally defined by their children. If you ask them directly what they like doing, or who they are, with the caveat that it has to be something besides their kids/motherhood, they have no answer. They have absolutely no identity at all outside "mother." Even their husbands don't make the list sometimes.

I bet those are these women. They don't know what to do with themselves once their sole source of identity leaves the nest.

That's cool! I've never seen one of those. :) Sounds like the perfect solution! Will you be able to get a cat when you return?

Too bad they're too expensive for pranks. Like RealDolls.

Some places don't allow cats. I can't follow their rationale. I'd never do it. But I can see why it would make sense for some.

It's funny, on the mom/identity front. I remember when my name stopped being used, and commented on it. "Oh, hi! You must be Amelia's mom. I'm Tiara's mom."

I don't see this as much different than spending $250 for an "Official" team jersey and wearing it to the game.

At a game, no fan would be mistaken for the real deal. That's not why fans wear jerseys but the women taking out the fake baby would easily be mistaken for a real mother.

I love the progression. my name changed as my kids got older. I was Keiffer's dad, then Savannah's dad. now I have two names, I am Lamar & Darius's dad by the time L&D get out of the house I will be little timmy's granddad. :lamo

Exactly! :)

They look more like dolls. And they're more scary than cute.
