So I am hoping someone will have some information. I won an 870 shotgun back in 2006 or so. I rarely shot this gun, and only at turkeys. Never had any issues. But I took it to the range a few days ago and shot it. The slide locked after each shot. I would literally have to smack the stock on my knee or a hard surface to get it to unlock.

I checked this out and apparently this is common. I just have no idea what part is broken that causes this. I'd like to know what part it is at least. Or at least if anyone has had experience with this and how they solved the problem.

I have some photos from the other day where it tore the shell and when it was locked:

Its been 30 years since I have shot a 870 but they are so common almost any gunsmith has worked on them. I don't know the answer though

A quick google showed it's a common problem but didn't show any common solutions. One poster mentioned that Winchester Super X was the only ammo that locked up his 870. What ammo did you try?

any chance sand or lint was introduced into the slide before you shot it

This is just an opinion, but based on the way the extractor pin tore the lip on the shell case,
that case must be stuck in the barrel.
this could be a dirty barrel, or maybe a case that was reloaded too many time or too hot.

Read the same post lol. Was using federal both times. Bird shot though. Also cheaper but it did it with some steel shot too. :(.

Absolutely. Turkey gun here in Florida. Sand and grime are real possibilities. But I cleaned the hell out of it and it still did it.

hmm i was going to say that sand would slow the release causing the lock to spring. but if it were clean, it sounds like another issue.

Shotgunworld.com ? 870 stuck shell cure...

It seems the machine marks need to smoothed so the metal doesn't expand and "lock" into the groves. Inspect an extracted case. I'd try some very fine sandpaper.

I'm actually buying a magnifying class so I can look today lol. Girlfriend was all pissy with me for cleaning a gun instead of doing dishes lol.

I am also in the process of sending Remington an email on this as well.

What, she didn't get turned on by the smell of Hoppes #9 ?!?! You need a new girlfriend. :2razz:

Excellent suggestion, often a few minor burs can cause all kinds of problems.

AFAIK, The metal expands to grip the walls of the chamber to take the stress off the slide locks. a rough chamber won't let go.

She doesn't like shotguns. Prefers rifles and pistols lol.
