So come up with a way to disarm criminals. Stopping law abiding citizens from owning legal weapons doesn't get the job done.

The founders intended to recognize rights they believed pre-existed government. What right was recognized by the second amendment?

and how could a right that pre-exists government be dependent on membership in a government regulated body known as a "well regulated militia"

In all fairness its a question that I have never had a gun banner or a gun restrictionist attempt to answer. Its sort of the neutron bomb when it comes to this argument. What usually happens is they start claiming natural rights don't exist or other diversions

there is no answer that can be produced that doesn't destroy the militia requirement nonsense
