A North Carolina man killed his neighbor and stole the man's money so he could buy an assault rifle to carry out an Islamic State-inspired shooting at a concert or club, according to an indictment unsealed Monday.

The federal indictment also accuses Justin Nojan Sullivan of offering an undercover FBI employee money to kill his parents, who he believed would interfere with his plans for an attack.

The 19-year-old suspect, who was arrested in June, "planned to carry out his attack in the following few days at a concert, bar or club where he believed that as many as 1,000 people could be killed using the assault rifle and silencer," the indictment said.

By the following June, investigators said, he was planning an attack in the U.S. He began having social media conversations with an undercover FBI employee whom he wanted to recruit, saying an attack in the U.S. was the best way to support the Islamic State because travel was risky.

He said during one of the conversations that he planned to buy "an AR-15 assault rifle" at a gun show, and he attempted to buy hollow point ammunition from a gun dealer, the indictment said. He researched how to make silencers and asked the undercover operative to make one for each of them.

Prosecutors: Islamic State Inspired N. Carolina Man's Plan - ABC News

He was going to buy the A.R. at a gun show.

Note: He was caught only because his parents notified authorities months before because their son was destroying religious items in the home. Had they not done that, this may have ended up being another mass killing. He was determined and had it planned out, starting with a murder. He also tried to hire informants to kill his parents, when he thought they might interfere with his plan.

It is unlikely he could have bought any assault rifle at any gun show, unless he could get a license for select fire and full auto weapons. The only thing he could have gotten was a semi auto version, which is no different from any other semi auto rifles available.

Further if he believed he could kill up to a thousand with an ar, he has probably never fired a gun, and does not understand that large capacity magazines jam often over 30 round, and the barrel after that many rounds would overheat, even if he only used one round per person.

He sounds like a real messed up person, but definately not very bright.

AR-15 assault rifle? Obviously the author of the article has not clue what he is talking about. AR-15s are not assault rifles.

You and the article could have passed yourselves off as half intelligent, if you knew the difference between a assault rifle and a semi automatic.

you cannot buy an "assault rifle" at a gun show

Three things - 1) he would never had been able to buy an assault rifle at a gun show, and 2) the OP article author must have never heard of a Class III license, and 3) the FBI is Johnny-on-the-spot (good for them).

On a related note - this happened about 45 minutes from my house.

Correction: He planned to buy an AR15 at a gun show.

Caught is caught; you seem disappointed.

And its all about guns to you. It has nothing to do with practitioners of the peaceful religion getting idiots like this kid to kill once again. Would you have felt some relief had he made his own explosives?

The article said an "assault rifle" and a "silencer". You can't by either at a gun show. Both require tax stamps. Where does one go to kill 1000 people? How does one sneak an AR-15 with a suppressor into a concert? That would be pretty noticeable. Didn't he know that killing people was illegal?

It does not have to make sense or be factual, all it has to do is pull those fear strings gun control believers have and they will believe anything.

These useless people do not check anything they are told if it accords with their belief. It's like telling a flat earther, don't go there you will fall off. Hey guys the end of the earth is here don't go beyond.....

most mass killers in the past had numerous red flags that were ignored by the authorities or reported by family members, and the authorities often have legal avenues under existing law to handle this.

thankfully in this case Law Enforcement was on the ball. tragically if he was just another run of the mill wacko with no islam connection he likely would've been ignored.
