RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. urged students, staff and faculty at his Christian school to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon on campus to counter any copycat attack like the deadly rampage in California just days ago.

"Let's teach them a lesson if they ever show up here," Falwell told an estimated 10,000 of the campus community at convocation Friday in Lynchburg. While Falwell's call to arms was applauded, his remarks also seemed to target Muslims.

"I've always thought if more good people had concealed carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in .," Falwell said. The final words of his statement could not be clearly heard on a videotape of the remarks.

However, Falwell told The Associated Press on Saturday he was specifically referring to Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, the husband and wife who shot and killed 14 people at a holiday party in San Bernardino on Wednesday.

I think this must be a first regarding a university urging its students to be armed.

Fear... Mindless fear.

Do you have any problem with how the president referred to "ending those Muslims."?

Edit: saw the statement where the liberty clarified his statement.

I've thought a lot of things about Liberty University, but 'dangerous' and 'unsafe' weren't among those things.

Where is the University's police department? Do they not provide for the students safety?

I do, a little. However, if those "Muslims" are armed terrorists bent on killing, what's the problem with taking them out? Yeah, he could've stated it a little more eloquently, but, we know what he meant. Do you equally chide Obama when he misspeaks, or is less than eloquent? You know, like when he said just the other day in Paris, "I say this every time we've got one of these mass shootings. This just doesn't happen in other countries,” ?

A "Christian" university wanting its students to be armed. The irony burns....

One wonders if they ever learned anything from the lives of Jesus and the apostles, or Jesus' admonition to "turn the other cheek". But instead of turning the other cheek, today's oh-so-"Christian" Right wants to "stand your ground"!

thats a stupid comment. where does it say Christians should be victims who don't fight back?
the more I see these sort of comments from the gun banner side, the more I realize the anti gun left are really the pro-criminal lobby

You don't know what you're talking about. Self-defense is no un-Christian.

Biblical Self-Defense: What does the Bible say about self-defense? Bible study about self-defense questions: Can a Christian own a gun? What do the Scriptures say about using lethal force for self-protection?

All universities have police, but rapes still occur. So what's your point?

My point is that I didn't know 'safety' needed to be a criteria in choosing a university, and that Liberty University decided that an F ranking was acceptable.

Turn the other cheek if someone smacks you or insults you.

Doesn't work so well if the other person wants to KILL you. As I've pointed out elsewhere, there's no commandment to stand still while someone guts you with a spear. Far from it.

It is kind of strange how so many think " turn the other cheek" means do nothing under any circumstance to defend yourself, it's silly.

Peter had a sword in several of the new testament writings.

Whine and stomp your feet all you want...I'll bet there will never be a school shooting there.

All them college aged virgins walking around with their fingers on triggers...not a safe thing...

Nah... consider them marvelously self-disciplined... :D

Ever been to Liberty? Lots of pretty hot gals there...

'Tis a mite difficult to 'turn the other cheek' when you're dead.

That's because their idea of Christians has nothing to do with reality.

especially not for rapists looking to score on some innocent virgins

When I went to University, my school promised me that they'd keep a safe campus. They helped ensure the security of the campus and worked with the city to provide police protection. It was a very basic standard.
I don't understand why Liberty University cannot promise the same and it's students must arm themselves for their own protection least they be attacked. WTF is going on at Liberty. It sounds dreadful.

The police in San Bernardino, CA also promised to keep people safe. Did they?
