I don't see guns as the problem. I see our enforcement or lack thereof as the real problem. I also don't necessarily mean gun laws. Lets look at the root cause of gun crime in the US...

Gangs and gang violence among our intercitys among minorities. 70% or more of all gun crime. This is where we should start.

#1 I would start by following New York's example and start holding police chiefs responsible for crime in their district. I would also add more officers to trouble area's. They would be more visible and pursue suspicious activity more aggressively.
a. Community watches and getting the residence involved in the neighborhoods would be a priority.
b. Much more aggressive gang intervention and prevention.
c. Cultural awareness. A Lot of hate and mistrust come out of the inner cities. They need to be shown that we see the problems and even more importantly that we state and local government are being proactive and doing something about it.
#2 End the useless war on drugs and move resources to addiction counseling and medical help. This would include a more aggressive approach to early education on the hazards of drug use by young children and adults.
a. Marijuana would be taxed and sold like other tobacco products. Harder drugs would be limited in dose and available via prescription. DUI in either case would still be in force.
#3 Prostitution would be legalized and an approach followed similar to Nevada.

If these things were followed, the money flowing freely to organized crime and gangs would be stopped. We would most likely see an immediate fall in gun related crime and other crimes as well.

None of these changes would be easy and morally, many would disagree. The time for quibbling though is over. We need to take firm steps in making our neighborhoods safer and stronger. In the process a large chunk, the majority of gun crime would simply fade.

Please discuss.

You forgot a very important item. Better education. Its proven that the more educated a person is the less likely they are to commit a crime. First thing I would do to rectify our educational problems is re-instate the A,B,C,D,F system of grading. It gives a more accurate view of what is going on. The current "above average", "average", and "below average" tells a parent nothing. Also I would make it to where a kid does not pass the grade if any of their subjects receive less than a C. Next I would make graduating mandatory for all kids and young adults up to the age of 20. No more GEDs. Next I would mandate that parents be informed every single time their kid is not in even 1 class period. Truancy laws would be enacted and enforced. I would also get rid of all programs that were not academic. IE sports. School should not be about athletics. It should be about academics.

This would be a good start.

What about percentages? I would also give things like sports as they can also improve marks and stop them form being in crime. If they have nothing to do the more likely they are to be involved in crime.

I can see some of those drug war funds headed your way.

Absolutely agree.

That and drop the no kid left behind non-sense, you don't want an education here is a shovel start digging.

Thats what the A,B,C,D,F system was based on. 90% plus = A- or better (A+), 80% = B- up to B+, 70% = C- up to C+, 60% = D- up to D+, 59% or below = F.

As for sports, sorry but just can't agree. Having sports has caused many a teacher, principle or coach to let a student ride through school without even learning how to read. That is a huge detriment and disservice to the kid's future and society. Other things can be found to keep the kids occupied.

Actually i've got an aunt that was a teacher for 30 years. She absolutely HATED the No Child Left Behind act because it never actually addressed the problems. So I agree with dropping it.

I have to disagree I don't know anyone who is costing through school only on sports. Most of the guys who are heavily involved in sports have some of the highest marks in the school. I prefer exact numbers because easier to see the change certain things have.

I've seen it happen. Some jock gets a passing grade just so he can play football. It doesn't matter how the marks are if the teacher either willingly or through pressure ups the marks just so the jock can play next weeks game.

Not sure how playing with a ball is intellectually stimulating. Even if the only thing you got on an IQ test is saliva you can still play sports.

I like your thinking overall.

I like the community policing idea in #1 esp with gangs-thats the problem in Ft Wayne.

The community being involved I'm not sure it will happen-too much distrust.

As to #2 I used to be a fan of the war on drugs-not anymore.

The counseling & help is a good idea but I'm not sure we can afford it.

I'm all in favor of legalizing & taxing the h*** out of marijuana, I don't like

but can go along with scripts on hard drugs tho I don't know why we'd need them.

#3 I hate the idea of prostitution

That said legalizing it while making sure they are healthy is probably ok with me.

Again make sure they are taxed>we need the money.

Thanks for a well reasoned post !!:twocents:

Funny how when offering solutions for discussion on gun violence, only one liberal minded person even comes into the thread. Then rather discussing the topic, even he discusses school grades rather addressing the problem and offered solutions to lower gun violence.

What does this tell you about liberals, guns and the political agenda behind gun laws in recent months?
