There are some 27 Tribal Jurisdictions, but these areas are not reservations. Those areas mean that if the tribe with jurisdiction owns land in that jurisdiction, then the tribal authorities have jurisdiction over law-enforcement questions on that land, not the local police or sheriff. There's a lot more to it than that, and I'm not really sure of all of the ins and outs of it. But I do know that it creates some real jurisdictional head-scratchers and effects the level of legal protection/recourse that Native Americans receive. |
