I don't agree its a more appropriate term, but more like a description of what kind of conservatism we are talking about. Iran and Saudi Arabia are conservative fundamentalist nations, where as places like Jordan are conservative dictatorships but not fundamentalist as the 2 others.. but they all are conservative, as they stick to "the old ways" rather than embrace (much needed) change, one of the cornerstones of conservatism as per the already posted definition.

And I state again, has nothing to do with American, Americans, or American conservatives.. that's something certain people have brought to the table to derail the discussion because they don't like the word "conservative" being linked with Islam.

Re: Are Democracy & Islam Compatible?

DEMOCRACY: A RELIGION!

Abu Muhammad ‘Aasim al-Maqdisi

....They distort the Truth with Falsehood, and mix the Light with the Darkness, and the Polytheism of democracy with the Monotheism of Islam. But we, with the help of Allah, replied to all of these fallacies, and showed that democracy is a religion. But it is not Allah’s religion. It is not the religion of monotheism, and its parliamentary councils are just places of polytheism, and safe havens for paganistic beliefs. All of these must be avoided to achieve monotheism, which is Allah’s right upon His servants. We must destroy those who follow democracy, and we must take their followers as enemies - hate them and wage a great Jihad against them. Democracy is an obvious polytheism and thus a clear disbelief that Allah has warned us against, in His Book. And His Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa'sallam) attacked such taghut (false deities) throughout his life. So, be firm - my monotheistic brother - on being one of the Prophet’s followers and helpers who attacks polytheism and it's people. Set out throughout your life to follow the path of those that apply Allah’s decree.

Re: Are Democracy & Islam Compatible?

by Syed Qutb

...Our primary purpose is to know what way of life is demanded of us by the Qur'an, the total view of the universe which the Qur'an wants us to have, what is the nature of our knowledge of God taught to us by the Qur'an, the kind of morals and manners which are enjoined by it, and the kind of legal and constitutional system it asks us to establish in the world.
We must also free ourselves from the clutches of jahili society, jahili concepts, jahili traditions and jahili leadership. Our mission is not to compromise with the practices of jahili society, nor can we be loyal to it. Jahili society, because of its jahili characteristics, is not worthy to be compromised with. Our aim is first to change ourselves so that we may later change the society.
Our foremost objective is to change the practices of this society. Our aim is to change the Jahili system at its very roots -this system which is fundamentally at variance with Islam and which, with the help of force and oppression, is keeping us from living the sort of life which is demanded by our Creator….
Man is servant to God alone, and he can remain so only if he unfurls the banner, "No deity except God,-"La ilaha illa Allah" -as an Arab with the knowledge of his language understood it: no sovereignty except God's, no law except from God, and no authority of one man over another, as the authority in all respects belong to God….
God knew that this was not the way. He knew that true social justice can come to a society only after all affairs have been submitted to the laws of God and the society as a whole is willing to accept the just division of wealth prescribed by Him, and every individual of the society, whether he be a giver or a taker, firmly believes that this system has been legislated by God Almighty, by obeying which he will not only prosper in this world but will be rewarded in the next…
The basis of the message is that one should accept the Shari'ah without any question and reject all other laws in any shape or form. This is Islam. There is no other meaning of Islam.
The Qur'an on the one hand constructs faith in the hearts of the Muslim community and on the other attacks the surrounding Jahiliyyah through this community, while struggling to remove all the jahili influences which are found in the ideas, practices and morals of the Muslim community...
Indeed, Islam has the right to take the initiative. Islam is not a heritage of any particular race or country; this is God's religion and it is for the whole world. It has the right to destroy all obstacles in the form of institutions and traditions which limit man's freedom of choice.
Other societies do not give it any opportunity to organize its followers according to its own method, and hence it is the duty of Islam to annihilate all such systems, as they are obstacles in the way of universal freedom….
Milestones - Sayyid Qutb

The difference- America righted itself and is close to equality. Indonesia seems headed on the path to disaster, as they seem not to have any constitution protecting their minorities (that anyone cares about).
