In this series I'll try to bring together the people, history, evolution and documentation to form a clear picture of who the neocons were, and who they are now... and perhaps most importantly, what their goals have been at certain times, what their tactics have been and continue to be.

For some this may seem to be hindsight, but I assure you, it is as relevant today as at any point in the last 40 years. To understand why, you must understand the who, why, what and when...

I'd like to state at the outset, that I do not use the term neocon in a pejorative way at all. Simply a term most of the characters in this story have ascribed themselves to at one time or another. Also, for the most part I'm going to avoid most of the conspiracy theory topics, though I'm sure some will arise in replies. Let me just say that there are a lot of ill informed nutty ideas floating around out there.

To call neocons simply Straussians or Trotsyites is to completely miss the contributions to the structure and philosophy of neoconservative ideology made by a host of successive characters stretching from a surprising revolutionary historical figure through history to Cheney, Kristol, Wolfowitz, et al. The nexus, the element that brought together the modern neocon movement is the most unlikely, and brilliant character of them all, and where we'll start...

Albert Wohlstetter... so not a neocon, and yet...

Until Saturday morning...
