It's been called unsportsmanlike. It's been called ugly. The question now is whether Christian Heritage (Utah) High, which routed West Ridge (Utah) Academy, 108-3, in a girls basketball game last week, actually did anything wrong by blowing out an overwhelmed opponent.

The stunning scoreline -- from a varsity game in which Christian Heritage reportedly never used a full-court press -- nearly defies belief. As reported in the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune, Christian Heritage scored 28 points per quarter for the first three periods and 24 in the fourth, providing a consistent average of nearly two baskets per minute across the entire game. The Crusaders shut out West Ridge (pictured above running on to the court for the team's game following the rout) for the first three quarters, and Christian Heritage starter Josi Rydin even racked up a unique triple-double, with exactly 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals.
"I don’t know why the score was that high, or what the point was," Jamie Keefer, West Ridge’s athletic director and a coach for the girls’ team, told the Salt Lake Tribune. "I don’t think it would’ve happened that way if it were the other way around."

Yet while Christian Heritage is a clear and obvious target for criticism, Crusaders coach Rob McGill has argued that he had little choice. According to ABC 4 News out of Salt Lake City, the program had just nine players available for both the varsity and junior varsity games against West Ridge, leaving the coach with little option when considering whether to pull out his starters early in the game.

Youth and High School sports ought to have a 'knockout' rule. I dont fault the team for scoring as well as they did. You cant tell athletes to go play half assed-some one will get hurt. Ive been on both sides of an ass whuppin. Both sides, its kind of a helpless feeling as a player or a coach.

In a game like this I'd like to see the coaches meet at halftime, mix up teams, and have a good scrimmage.

How could anybody see this and fault the players?

They play to win. At what point do you teach young people to give up when they are ahead? 10 points? 20 points? 50 points?

What would that teach them?

How the hell do you only score three points in a game in organized basketball? I'm guessing it was a team of giants vs. a team of midgets.

the only problem i have is with the coach/AD of the losing team:
"I don’t know why the score was that high, or what the point was," Jamie Keefer, West Ridge’s athletic director and a coach for the girls’ team, told the Salt Lake Tribune. "I don’t think it would’ve happened that way if it were the other way around."
why has this coach/AD put her girls at such a disadvantage
if they are without the athletic ability to compete, then why play - and embarrass your kids - by placing them in a public, competitive event
by her comments, she appears to intimate that the winning coach should have had his players hold back
that would have been an inappropriate action for that winning coach to take. you do not coach your kids to play hard, play your best - and then tell them to back off
jamie keefer either needs to put a competitive team on the floor with her coaching, or she should stfu
notice the difference in philosophies between the coaches? ... the results are found in the game score

These things always bring out the differences in philosophy about sports, athletics and coaching. Should you play all out for the full time of the game regardless of the lopsided nature of the score, or should the winning coach at some point make adjustments to lessen the beating?

Like others have said here, I have been on both sides and you learn from both. I once coached a 7th/8th grade boys basketball team that won all 17 games in its season by an average of 32 points per game and that was with playing all 12 players, the least for at least 8 minutes in every game. The next year we lost 13 straight before winning our last three of four. So these things happen.

I would hope that once the score is quadrupled (or more) in the fourth quarter, some sort of mercy would be applied by the winning coach in anact of largesse. Obviously, they are under no obligation to do so and you cannot fault a coach who does not see fit to do that. I just think its a nice gesture to try to lessen the sting a bit.

I'm normally not one to pick up on the simple side of this debate. I tend to think that teaching your kids to win at all costs is a good thing, but 108 to 3 is a little over the top? :)

when I was in 7th grade, we went to play the alternative school in basketball. I was 5'4" and the tallest kid on our team. they had players with full beards and kids in the stands. the score was around 60-0 at halftime. most of us cried in the locker room and begged the coach not to make us go back out for the 2nd half.

final score was well over 100+ to 3. I hit a lucky jumper and got fouled for the 3 pt play.

In retrospect, I am glad coach made us finish the game. whenever any of us get together was all have a good laugh about it now.

many people these days overlook the character building aspect of taking a good old fashioned ass whipping.

maybe 108-3 was with the winning coach making adjustments to lessen the beating?

when my middle son was 6-7 his soccer team was county champs. they averaged 12-13 goals a game. they only had two subs, so it wasn't like they had a couple of stars that they kept in to run the score up. as a coach, you can't/shouldn't encourage your players to go out and play like crap.

as a nine year old playing my first season of organized baseball, our team as on the losing end of a 53-3 ball game (back in the day we played major league rules - there was no such thing as a mercy rule)
but i hit the first two home runs of my young life in that game and began my limited career as pitcher the next game
sometimes, those awful events lead to great opportunities - and memories

hopefully, those players on the losing team will find something motivational about their lopsided loss (with any luck it would be the firing of the coach/AD)
